Hello all! I'm new to this forum and have a question....

With a BMI close to 70, how big is too big for Lap RNY?  Am I destined for a open because of my weight?

Any answer on the matter will be greatly appreciated.

Things will not stay the same no matter how much we would like them too. When a life change occurs, we have two choices in how to respond. We can despair that a change has come and assume that things will be worse, or we can look with excitement at the new possibilities that the change presents. "

Welcome!

Honestly, the real answer is,  it all depends on the DR.

Best wishes to you!

Edited to add - my BMI was over 64 and I had lap surgery done.

EDIT~ THIS SHOULD HAVE READ 60 NOT 50...oop's. THe cut off at Buffalo Generals Program was 60.

I had a 70ish BMI too. I had to lose weight to qualify at my program. They want you under 50. The tools can only reach into you so far. There may be better tools elsewhere though. I don't know if all programs are the same.

Start: 487 lbs (8/07) Lost 81 lbs pre op on South Beach. 406 lbs at surgery (6/08). 179 post op, by 2011. I  lost 308 lbs. Gained 98 while pregnant (2012-13) lost all but 25. My goal is to be 179 again!

Thanks for the welcome!

You got a point, the doctor would be the best person to answer my question.

Hi!  I just had surgery in November and was around the same BMI.  They did my surgery lap and all went fine.  You need to talk with your dr.

Good Luck!

Hey Red,

My starting BMI was 70.  I believe it depends entirely on the doctor.  My surgeon will not perform LAP RNY on any patient, period.  He only preforms it open.  But, other docs in the bariatric program do perform RNY laproscopically.

What is your aversion to an open procedure?

Hi Double O!

I really don't have a problem with being cut open. But after a c-section in 2005, hysterectomy in 2006 and a ovary removed in 2007; I'm sorta looking for a change!

The doctor will decide what will be best for my case.

My BMI was 83 and my surgery was Lap.  Find a dr who is confident in his abilities and has a high success rate with larger patients.  Don't settle for less!

Hi. well my BMI is 79 and i asked my dr the same thing because with having 3 c-sections and a hysterectomy i don't really wanna get cut open again. anyways, he said that there was no reason why he couldn't do it laproscopically (i hope i spelled that right..lol)....But the surgeon i was going to before i started seeing this surgeon said i had to lose weight before he would do the surgery so i guess it all depends on the surgeon...Good Luck....If i can help you out in any way just send me a messege and i will try to answer any questions to the best of my ability......

I have a BMI of 66 and am scheduled for tomorrow. The surgeon did suggest that it might be a posibility that if they got in there and my liver was too large and the retractor couldn't hold it back to do the surgery (the pouch is in back of the liver) then they might pull out, and give me a few more months to get my liver not at fatty. This is happening in a center for excellence too. I'm concerned. I don't want to wake up in the recovery room and they tell me they will see me back there in a few months when I lose more weight. What a thought!!! My doctor would rather not do an open....Jane
