"Half Ton" Programs on TLC Last Night

Did anyone catch the "Half Ton" programs on TLC last night?  There were three of them:  Half Ton Mom, Half Ton Dad, and Half Ton Teen.  They were all based out of Houston.

I strongly identified with Half Ton Dad and was rooting for him the entire hour.

I was annoyed at some of the things that were said during the program.  During Half Ton Mom, they kept telling her what a pretty face she had.  GRR!  How come no one ever tells fat men they have such pretty faces if only they would lose weight?

Also, there was one bariatric doctor who kept referring to SMOs as, "These people..."  I found that statement to be sizist and dehumanizing.  These people, indeed.  If it wasn't for "these people," dude, you'd be out of a job.

Half-Ton Mom passed away after her surgery, she was operated on at 900 lbs.  Half-Ton Dad was put on a diet and movement regimen prior to surgery.  I didn'****ch Half-Ton Teen, his parents drove me insane and I knew I'd throw the remote at the TV.

Curious to hear others' thoughts on the programs,

Kix

I watched Half Ton Teen and I wanted to give his mother a good shake.  I know my mother nagging me about food only made things worse but when your child is to fat to get out of a chair how do you just keep feeding them junk?

I really worry about balancing teaching my children (who don't yet exist) about healthy eating, not pushing them into an eating disorder, and being understanding if they are fat.  I have never had a normal relationship with food so how can I make sure my children do?

I couldnt sleep last night and actually watched those and a couple of others. There was one where the guy was so not following his diet and was very nasty about it when the producers tried to talk to his wife about enabling him. He was 1071lbs when they took him out of his house. I did switch for the teen as it really bothered me as I am struggling how to balance my old habits my kids have grown with, with the new things I know and am using now. *SIGH* It scares me that my kids might follow that path.

I nearly cried when the half ton dad took his first moment on his feet in years.  It was very touching.

That one sounds like "Half Ton Man", the first program TLC showed about SSMO people.  That dude, who I meanly call Fat ******* really had issues that go way beyond being SSMO.  He was just a mean azzhat, and when he told his WLS doctor (the man who saved your life, Fat *******) that the doc was a real porker and what a good thing it was he had WLS, I wanted to punch him.  Not only that, how did he get someone to marry him?  I liked how their kitchen was full of junk food, and when he was exercising as a post op, he asked his wife for another Diet Dr. Pepper.  Get up and get it yourself, and why are you drinking soda pop in the first place?!  When he talked about how he wanted to lose weight so he could consummate his marriage, I wanted to hork.

Hi Kix,

I enjoyed watching those shows.

I agree about the Half Ton Teen's Mom.  He was so emotionally disabled due to her "babying" him all the time.  She definitely was a hindrance for him.  It seems to me that she will probably sabotage his efforts.  It sounded like she is still in so much pain over the loss of her first child that she went way overboard with this one.  Not to mention, that she is not anywhere near close to cutting the apron strings with him.

I was shocked when the Half Ton Woman died - but I think it's a good thing that they showed that to let people know how serious the situation can be.

Do you know if there are any follow ups planned so that we can see their progress?
