Still Struggling with food
Ok so I am now officially 8 days out of Lap Band surgery and nothing seems to satisfy me. I just started getting all my water in,but I still want real food. The protein shakes and yogurts/puddings aren't getting it done. I keep finding myself taking little nibbles of my kids foods(spagettios, grilled cheese, etc). I know I have come this far but I can't seem to stay satisfied. I have 6 more days until soft foods and I don't know what to do. I hope I can wait that long but I am just so weak right now. Has anyone else gone thru this? How did you get thru? Why do I feel hungry? My nutritionist is on vacation til next week and I can't talk to her til then. Please help
I had the RNY. But I feel you. I thought I wanted to eat. It was all in my mind. Please...try to get all of your protein in even if you can't get your water in. I do the whey protein shakes from walmart. Just two shakes a day with low fat skim milk with give you 68grams of protein. Try adding a half of banana or frozen strawberries and blend it to a liquid form. I want sit and say it wasn't hard but after my nut. told me to make sure I get in the protein I felt so much better. And now I'm where I can have the soft foods and I am not hungry at all. So for me personally it's a mind thing. Please be encouraged... you can do it.

I had lap band surgery on Nov. 24th and went through the same thing you are going through. When you are in that straw test phase, the only protein that you can get is from dairy or soy. Soups satisfied my hunger more, but had very little protein. Even though I as getting my 60 g of protein in a day, I was very weak and dizzy and had constant headaches. Once you move to the mushy stage, things will improve. The first day I was on the mushy stage, I made chili with ground meat and lots of beans. I blended it all in the magic bullet blender. It ended up looking like re fried beans, but it tasted like chili. I immediately felt better. I found that protein from animals and beans seemed to really help. I wasn't dizzy anymore and didn't feel like my blood sugar was all over the place. I still get hungry about an hour after I eat when the food passes through the band, but over time I was able to deal with that better. When you don't feel like you're going to pass out, hunger can be ignored. I don't know what your daily calorie intake is, but my doctor originally suggested 800-1000 cal per day. When I was on that plan, I was only losing 1 pound a week. This was extremely frustrating, since I felt like I was eating so well compared to my usual caloric intake. A nutritionist friend of mine (not connected with any bariatric clinic) suggested that I increase my caloric intake to 1200/day. When I did this, I began to lose more weight. Now, I average 1400-1600 per day and am losing about 5 pounds per week. My nutritionist said that eating less calories put my body into starvation mode. If you feed your body, more weight will come off and you will have more energy to exercise. The following are the foods that I have in my kitchen for the mushy stage.
chili fixings
soups (bulleted)
couscous
fruit flavored applesauce (strawberry, peach, and peach mango)
sugar free and fat free pudding cups
non-fat yogurt (vanilla yogurt mixed with applesauce and cinnamon is very tasty)
small star pasta and spaghetti sauce
mashed potatoes (I bought the instant so that I could see the calorie content on the label.)
Julienne potatoes (instant)
cream of wheat (I make it thick so that I don't get hungry fast)
I hope this helps. I was in the same spot you were and was begging for advice. Now that I only have 2 days left on the mushy stage, I think I have it figured out.

Good Luck and hand tough,
Thanx for that advice. I found the Special K Protein water mix ins and they have been a huge help. I now now longer struggle to get all my protein and water in. they have 5g per bottle. I also find myself less hungry now because of that. I only have 3 days til mushy time and Im sure that will satisfy these urges.
Remember your stomach is still getting used to the band, so unless those food are authorized, stay away! You don't want to cause band slippage or anything like that!
Well, the reason you feel hungry is that you still have the whole stomach underneath the band and it's empty.
Maybe do protein shakes more often. You are recovering from a surgery, so that's why you could be feeling under the weather and not very much energy.
Remember, you also aren't going to have restriction until you get probably 2 or 3 fills, so that will make a difference on how hungry you feel, too...
You just have to surf out those cravings to eat, telling yourself it's not an option to have ______ right now, but you can have it later. Kick yourself in the butt with resolve, you haven't come this far to start breaking rules starting out.
You can do it! Anyone can do something for a short time - just remember, you don't have to make it through forever, just til you can move to the next stage with food.
