How easy is it for you to gain weight?
Happy New Year, Everyone! It has been awhile since I have posted. I am wanting to find out how easy it is for others to gain weight. If I eat over 1200 calories a day, I gain weight. It is nothing for me to put on 2 pounds overnight. I'm NOT talking pigging-out, just not able to eat very much. Some will try and tell me that that is jus****er. Maybe for them, but not for me....I believed that 10 pounds ago! And it is A LOT worse when I do not get my daily exercise! My family actually feels sorry for me because of how little I eat and yet can still GAIN weight and not just maintain. After having weighed 450+ pounds, I know my metabolism is still messed up, but I am working out 5 days a week, etc. I also keep track of my food intake on fitday.com. Well, I was just wondering if others find it so easy to gain weight. Thanks and God bless!

I see some people on the RNY board reporting the same thing. I am not to the point where I can easily gain weight yet, but it makes some sense. Your body is obviously good at conserving energy. In times of famine (say after RNY lol) this would be an advantage over others so your ancestors survived when others didn't. However, in times of plenty you end up heavy because your body is a calorie-saving machine. If you dieted for years you probably lowered the set point of your metabolism even more. Its trained itself to rely on less and still conserve. Stupid bodies.
I got to my starting weight by over-eating, no doubt, but I also found that even when I followed the exact same diet as a friend who was 100lbs less than me - we lived together and literally ate the same thing and did the same workouts, she lost weight twice as fast. It doesn't make sense because I was so much heavier, my basal metabolism should be much higher plus I burned more calories lifting and exercising an extra 100lbs, so someone please explain that one! I had one doctor *****ally understood it - he asked me if both parents were heavy and I said yeah. He said well, you are genetically screwed and if you want to lose weight you will need to work at least twice as hard as a lot of people. Yay! I went home and had some cake.
I wish you luck and the best way I can suggest that you raise your metabolism is by strength training. Aerobic exercise mainly burns calories. Strength training increases the metabolic activity of your muscles. Also, as you try to increase your muscle mass you should probably incorporate as much protein as you can manage. Increasing muscle mass may also show as a slight increase on the scale but its not a bad thing.
All the best!

Hi. I haven't had WLS yet and gain weight so easily. I feel like I can just look at food and gain weight. I have had all kinds of tests done and all negative. The doctor said it is genetics along with me being so overweight my metabolism is very slow. I'm hoping daily consistent exercise will help. Sorry, I couldn't be of any help, good luck.
