1 year doctor visit - an iron question

Had my 1 year follow up visit today.  Everything looks good and I lost another pound from yesterday.  Probably because I hadn't eaten anything since 6:30 this morning.  Boy I'm suffering from that stupid mistake right now.

My labs look really good.  Cholesterol was 121 and triglycerides were 46.  He was really excited about the triglycerides.  I told him I eat like an athlete.  My A1C was 5.4  More than half what it was pre-surgery.

The only troubling thing that they saw was my iron levels were really low.  32...less than half what it was pre-surgery.  I've been notified at least 2X per  year about low iron levels so that seems to be an issue with me.  I have really bad periods too.  I asked about my protein and he still wants me to take iron 2X per day.

So  my question is what do you take and in what quanties.  He told me to take the bariatric advantage iron because it tastes good and I'll be more prone to take it.

I do take iron - I take polysaccharide iron from vitalady because its absorbed well and has a high dose. I don't like the way BA iron tastes, and the other kind I tried, vitron C, upset my stomach. Always take your iron on an empty stomach and preferably with vitamin C or a swig of OJ.

I like this one because it has150mg elemental iron. I take one every morning when I wake up and it never upsets my tummy or turns my poop black or constipates me as iron has in the past. I've been anemic before, but not since surgery (at least as of my last blood work 7 months ago).

I am going to get drawn on Thurs, I'll let you know how my iron looks.

I take on OTC iron from WalMart.  I have had issues with iron levels for many years now and if I take one a day it seems to keep my numbers at an acceptable level for my PCP.  My iron supplements do constipate me, but so does a lot of other stuff too so senokot is a staple in my medicine regimen.

I take the Celebrate Vitamins  Iron + C and my iron has come up - it was low presurgery.   They taste great too (grape flavor).  I take one at lunch time and no constipation!!

Iron was one thing I was worried about before I decided on the RNY.  I have been anemic for awhile now and I too have very bad periods.  I ordered the Celebrate vitamins too and they aren't too bad.  Trying to get myself in the habit of taking them before surgery so it will be easier post op.
5 MORE DAYS!  Hooray!
