I want a soda soooo bad. This is the first soda craving I've had since surgery, it hit me while I was lecturing. I've tried a sip of one now and again if I needed to burp but never actually drink soda - really hardly any even before surgery, so its weird.

Its probably because I had fast food for breakfast.

B - 1/2 sausage and egg taquito

S - 1/2 sausage and egg taquito

So far that's 410 calories, 24g fat, 17g protein, 27g carbs and 3g fiber. I will post the rest of my day later. I had a great planned day all packed up and ready to go but I left my food and my husband's food on the kitchen counter. I guess I know what's going in the trash this evening.

L - nothing

S - 1 jolly rancher, the topping off a piece of spinach pizza from school

D - some more chicken (checking myself for feathers) and some green beans (sparzibonen!)

I do my best to choke down my vitamins each night.  Some night though - I just don't have the courage.

I know what you mean about the soda.  I had given them up completely at least six months before the surgery and it has been about six months since surgery but ohhhh if I could just have a coke I think I would be a happy woman - well, until I dumped!

B - decaf coffee and an apple
L - mexican surprise (I made this last night and brought enough for the week)
S - Activia light yogurt and almonds
S - probably nothing - going to support group meeting tonight

Vitamins are not optional. Have you tried breaking them up into multiple doses during the day?

Remember you can't take calcium and iron at the same time! You won't get the iron.

I break mine up into 4 doses through the day and take three with meals:

Wake up: iron (works best on an empty stomach but bothers some people that way - don't take with caffeine or calcium-rich foods or eggs)

Breakfast: half of multis, 1 calcium

Lunch: half of multis, 1 calcium

Dinner: 2 calcium

By taking them with meals or around the same time (I usually take them about 15min before with a small amount of liquid since I try not to drink while I eat) I rarely forget them or have to play catch-up before bed.

If you are having trouble stomaching a certain kind of vitamin, try a different brand. I couldn't stand any of the chewable multis so when I was three months out I switched to capsules that dissolve fast (bariatric advantage). I also couldn't do really large pills and those are small. My calcium (citracal plus) is also smaller than many - the off brands of calcium with the same ingredients seem larger and also upset Thundercles, so I stick with citracal. I did chewable calcium citrate for a while but yucko. And make sure EVERYONE that its calcium citrate NOT calcium carbonate. I don't care who told you otherwise, even your surgeon, the research shows citrate is what you need. We need stomach acid to absorb calcium carbonate, and your pouch has little to no acid secretion ability (most of the acid is made in your lower stomach). And magnesium with your calcium is a very good idea for constipation and also because if your Mg/Ca balance is out of whack you won't absorb Ca well at all. Look for Ca with Mg added, and vitamin D of course.

And make sure you are taking an iron that is bioavailable for bariatric patients - ferrous fumarate or polysaccharide iron are the two I remember off-hand but others work also. Iron is more important for women and men should only take it if their bloodwork indicates a need.

Oh, another thing I do is divide everything out into daily plastic bags, every weekend. I carry a bag with me in my purse so I know what I took and what I didn't by the end of the day. I know if I got them all in. I also add 4 colace to the pack. Otherwise I will inevitably forget something.

My physician's office is pretty thorough and I am thankful for that because they make sure you are taking the right vitamins.  The one I really struggle with is the B complex because of the horrible aftertaste.  It is a caplet but still leaves a taste in my mouth.  I leave that one for last and most days I get it down.  Thankfully in 2 weeks I no longer have to take that one!!!

Oh yeah I took some NASTY B complexes for a while I was sooo glad when the bottle was done. If you ever have to take them again the bariatric advantage B complex capsules are really not bad. I don't do a B complex now but I do take 10,000mcg B-12 3x per week sublingually.

I hate when I leave my food at home!!!  I'm not a pre-planning t ype person, but when there's good leftovers, I really get mad at myself.

B - 3/4 c fiber one cereal w/ 1/2 c skim milk  (seems to be doing the trick for me!!!)
S - Sargento smoked gouda slice
L - 1/2 of wendy's side salad and small chili
S - Oikos honey 0% yogurt
D - 4 oz pork tenderloin and broccoli
S - 1/2 sf pistacio pudding

Only 790 calories and 68 g of protein, but it's a lot of food for me!

We'll see where I end up.

For breakfast I had an apple/cinnamon protein bar from VitaLady - it was pretty darn tasty, I LOVE the lemon ones. When we have money again I'll order a few boxes.

For lunch I'm going to try to choke down a "Syntha-6 Chocolate Milkshake' flavored protein drink.  Oh, don't think it's the brand name or anything - no, I'm one of those that really detests protein drinks of any kind.  I tried to follow Ms. Jenn's lead of trying (really trying) to find a protein powder I like - no such luck.

For dinner I'm having a buffalo burger and cottage cheese. Buffalo for some reason just makes my lil' tummy oh so very happy. Last night I made pork ribs with a homemade SF BBQ sauce - took a few bites and my tummy turned itself inside out in protest. I had made the BBQ sauce before and everything was fine...last night though, there was hell to pay!

Take Care,
Jana

The only one I genuinely LIKE is the cinnamon roll dessert protein flavor from the same people who make syntha-6. There rest are more or less tolerable, mostly less :) And it really was about 8 months before I could even drink any of them because of the smell.
