About 17 years ago I started having knee problems, I had both of them reconstructed about 15 years ago.  Then had a torn meniscus (sp?) had that one fixed.  Now been having pain and swelling lately in my right knee so,
I went to the knee doc today and he gave me a shot of cordizone (sp?) in my right knee.  OUCH.  Anyway they took xrays and said actually my left knee is in worse shape, anyway he had xrays from 5 years ago and compared them and said that I have arthritis very bad in my knees and all he can do for me is to give me shots in them until the steroid doesnt work anymore.  He said I am too young to do replacements so he wants me to wait until I absolutley can't stand the pain anymore, he said within 5 years I will probally be totally bone on bone.  I told him about my RNY and he said that he cannot prescribe any anti-inflamitory drugs because of my pouch, which I understood.  He said even if you lose 200 lbs it wont cure your arthritis its just something I am going to have to live with.  He said go ahead and exercise and just do what I can, and if what I am doing irritates them to just slow down and do the best I can.  I guess I won't be running in a marathon anytime soon.  DARN....but it's ok there are alot of people who have alot more to deal with that my problems.

Anyway, just needed to complain to someone.

Sorry that the doctor didn't have great news for you today, Debbie.

I taugh****er aerobics for years, and can highly recommend that form of exercise for your condition.  Still get great resistence training & cardio, but not the strain on your joints.  Also, I know some of the pools (our local Y's  & Forest Hills) offer a large area for water walking, which would also be very good exercise given your condition.

Hang in there!  Hopefully as the weight comes off, the pain will lessen.

Hi Debbie -

I'm 43 and had my right knee replaced this past August; I go in for my left knee in January or February.  I had WLS on 12/17/07 and have lost 170 lbs; I now weigh 270 (and I'm STUCK!)

My knees are both bone on bone and have been for at least 5 years.  One ortho said he'd operate when I got down to 200 lbs. However, I have a 6 year old dd and I wasn't willing to miss another minute of doing fun things with her. I've never been on a bike ride with her, we've never gone hiking, etc.  I found another doctor who took into consideration my commitment to health and he was more than willing to do surgery, even though I weight about 300 lbs. at the time.

I've been on the cortizone shots, I've done synvisc, I've taken Tramadol and I'm probably one of the few RNY patients who was allowed to continue taking Celebrex after surgery with the full support of my WLS surgeon and PCP.

Having knee surgery was the 2nd best decision I ever made next to WLS. Frankly, I cannot wait to have my other one done.

Exercise is important.  I agree with water aerobics.  As my ortho told me, it wasn't going to help my knees (once you're bone on bone, nothing helps!) but it help get weight off fast!  Once I lost enough weight, I started swimming laps.  Both helped build up muscles in my legs - very important for physical therapy after knee replacement.  What am I doing now?  Weight lifting, cardio, swimming, and water aerobics.

Best of luck to you.  All I can tell you is that I understand the bone crunching pain you are having and it SUCKS!  I explain it to people as it's every day, 24/7, gnawing pain.  It's not like muscle pain - it's almost like funny bone pain but constant.

Please pm me if I can help you at all.

OOUCH!

I can relate to knee pain (not to the extent of yours) I broke my knee 3 years ago and because of my weight  they could not operate..hence....the arthritis in the knee now.

I find water aerobics is the very best for my knee and can do that as its so much easier than weight bearing aerobics! I go 3x a week and want to go to curves once I am down a bit more.

Sorry you have to go through all this pain :( I do feel for you!!!

My knees aren't too bad yet, but my feet and ankles are killer bad. That was the OTHER bad news at my appt. today. I think I need a knee & foot doc.

I'm aching in sympathy.

My knees are shot, too.  I'm not bone on bone, but my right knee sometimes catches for no reason while I'm walking.  I take Tylenol nearly every day, which sort of takes the edge off.

The pain sux, but work through it as best you can, taking it easy when it's too much.  I also use Aspercreme or Icy Hot or Therabalm or whatever I have in the house.  It helps, too.

What I don't understand lately is why my feet hurt.  I've never had foot problems, and I can count on them hurting at some point each day.  I probably need an orthotic.  Oy.  When I weighed 500+ lbs, my feet never hurt.  Go figure!

*hugs* Sorry to hear your appt didnt go so well!!! I would look into the water aerobics that was suggested. Also maybe consider a 2nd opinion on when surgery would be the right thing to do.
