Give Me the Scoop! (Protein Powder)

Hi All -

I know some of you use protein shakes and powder and actually love them.  I have, at best, a passing knowledge of them and at worst I don't like them.  However, I'm finding that eating right all the time is difficult from grabbing a quick lunch, etc. and I know I need to find a palatable fix.

Jen, I know you've been on the search for a yummy (ok passable) protein shake.  What have you found?  If I try it and hate it can I send the leftovers to you? LOL

What are the rest of you trying?  I have tried the Bariatric Advantage RTD shakes (add water, turns into a shake) - uh, no. Too thick, too sweet.  Another thing I don't like is that foamy stuff when you whirl things in the Magic Bullett - shudder.  The only one I tried and liked (early out) was a peanut butter/chocolate sample - but I threw the package away and have no idea where I got it. $&%*#@(@Q^~!!

I read someone's eating plan for today and I noticed a "Orange Creamsicle" drink or something.  Yum! What is that?? If I don't like it, can I send the leftovers to you? (I hate wasting stuff)  Do you mix with water or milk; I use 1% milk or can get Carb Countdown stuff from WalMart.

Thanks,
Jana

I totally agree about the bariatric advantage ones - thick and sticky. So far I've found the ones from BSN (Syntha-6 *edit* and some of the dessert proteins) to be tolerable. Synthrax isn't all whey though. My husband really likes the ones from vitalady that have ice cream in the title, but I find them too sweet and too milky (I also mix my shakes with milk). One of my coworkers had a vanilla I actually really liked but he's moved and I can't get a hold of him. I want to try the orange from matrix but its a huge container and I haven't seen samples.

And sure you can send them to me LOL

Hi Jana,

I just tried JD(or maybe JA?) Robb protein powder I picked up in a natural foods store, they had sample packs so I got one chocolate and one vanilla.  I already threw away the packages but I know it had 25 gm of protein, 1 gm carb and I don't think it had any sugar!  They are really good! On the thin side, not sweet, chocolate had a very lite chocolate taste, the vanilla was okay but I think I'll stick with chocolate, oh, and they had a strawberry that I think I'll try.  And you can mix them with water or milk and it said a few other things I don't remember.  If you mix it with milk thats 35 grams of protein.
My nut told me how to make a Orange Creamsicle:  vanilla protein powder with water and add like a teaspoon or so of, she used Walmart brand, orange crystal light.  She made some at the appt. and it did taste somewhat like a Creamsicle.

Oh, and I almost forgot, I got a Tupperware drink shaker on Ebay for around 10 bucks, it mixes quickly and it's not too foamy!  works great!

I had a chike sample powder today that was orange and I mixed it with milk and it reminded me of a orange creamsicle.

I've had samples of the matrix cookies and cream that I can tolerate.

But my favorite, above all, is the Unjury chocolate.  There is no aftertaste and I don't find it too sweet.  What I've found if a powder is too sweet is to add 2 extra oz of milk to the shake and it helps with the thickness and the sweetness.

I'm the orange creamsicle poster today. As others have said, you can doctor up a vanilla in several ways, but mine are Medifast. They are all I've tried so far, but am considering branching out. I think MF is pricier than just buying the powder in bulk, but they are individual serving packets, which makes it easy. You have to order them through their website. I think they are mostly soy, but I also think they may have whey as well for people who can't handle soy.

They offer a bunch of different flavors. I find the vanilla a bit bland by itself. The dark chocolate and cherry pomegranate are from their anti-oxident line - they are a little gritty at times, but still taste good to me. My current favorites are Dutch Chocolate and Swiss Mocha.

I'm not a salesperson, just a satisfied customer. In fact, I'm so dense about business stuff that I only recently figured out that Medifast is a MLM. Doesn't bother me - I'm not interested in another career, just finding a tool that works for me. So far this does because it is really easy.

I have been thinking about trying some of the Champion shakes - I think the price per serving is much less, but I'd lose the convenience of a packet.

I like mine best mixed up in my little Medifast blender with ice - I ordered it because it was worth it to me to not have to go to the store to find a Magic Bullet, even though I paid a little more. Now that I get around better, that would be less of an issue, but I still hate to shop...

At work I use a shaker jar and water from the cooler - much less disruptive not to be whizzing a magic bullet in the next cube. If I had a private office (state gov't workers rarely do in Oregon), I'd whiz away.

The only times I have issues with froth is with their strawberry shakes or if I take the hot Chai tea mix and turn it into a shake.

If you read this far, I'm amazed.
