Welcome to the board!
It's a very friendly place.
I'm 55 and a pre-op. I've been ramping up my exercise and eating high protein. I don't know if and when I might have surgery, but what I've done so far is a vast improvement over where I was last winter.
I think one of the potential challenges for us Boomer girls is the natural slowing of the body's ability to heal. I know that since I've upped my water and protein, minor cuts seem to be healing better.
One additional challenge is the damage we have done to our bodies by carrying so much weight for so long. My feet and ankles would hurt so much at the end of a day, I used to be in tears. My footprint no longer has an arch, and my toes are deformed. But there is good news!
I'm 70 lbs. lighter than I was when I started this journey, and while my feet still hurt sometimes, it''s not as bad as it was.
So my advice is to get yourself in the best shape you can, at the weight you are now. That might mean starting with chair or bed exercises, but start living life a new way now - before surgery.
Best wishes, and don't be shy. The rest of the folks will be waking up later - I'm off to bed.
Patty

Welcome - the other ladies gave you some great advice. I wish i had tried to get in better shape BEFORE my surgery. I'm so glad I had it, my BMI was almost 55 at the time, do you have a recliner? getting out of bed was a %(*)&%! You will find everyone here extremely supportive and knowledgeable. Good luck to ya! lys
I am 5'8 and at surgery weighed 384. I am 4 days post op and feeling awesome. I'm 32 years old and I know that makes a difference but so far it hasn't been a bad experience. my pain has been minimal and I can't wait for the results. My lower back hurts all the time as well so that's what I'm looking forward to the most about losing weight. Good luck to you. You'll do great!

Hi Nancy
Congrats on making the decision to have WLS, that is the first part of the battle. I started at 5"2', 344#, BMI of 63.3. I too carry most of my wt in my abdomen, (and my thighs). I had lower back pain when ever I woke up, it was also starting to get bad when I worked. I have to say that now my back hardly ever hurts, and I feel 1000% better!!!! I am 4 1/2 months out from RNY. Try to stay positive and start making small changes that will help with the wt loss. Drink lots of water!!! start exercising, even if just walking; it will help!!! I found that doing exercises in the pool was a lot easier on my joints. I also cut out any salty snacks and pop, I really think that sorta jump started my wt loss.
Hope this helps!!! Feel free to ask any questions you have!!

Hi Caroline,
Thanks for the encouraging words. I have already started changing my bad habits. I am now a non smoker---yes obese and a smoker---I have also started changing my eating habits. I eat my protein first, and I ahve cut my carbs way back. One of the things I learned about me was that I am a gulper. I can't believe how fast I was eating. I wasn't even tasting my food. I have learned to chew, chew , chew. What a revelation. As far as exercise goes I am at an impass. I can't walk for more than five minutes before I can't stand the pain. I am saving for a exercise bike with a chair on it. One way or other I will figure it out. Thanks again. Nancy
