6 month diet history for the newbie

Hello Everyone
This is my second time around on the OH forums. First time was back in 2006 when I was trying to have surgery (DS) well things did not work out due to my dh insurance having a clause that I was not aware of for almost a year. After jumping through their hoops it seems it was there all along but the surgeons office and UHC could not find it while I was busy doing all the stuff they required.

Anyway so now I am back as the dh has new job and new insurance that has been checked out by both me and UHC and it seems it covers for the surgery. Only thing is now I have to get the 6 month diet thing going as before they did not require that as a requirement.

Anyone got any hints on what that is all about and how that works as well as the test that must be run due to the high BMI?  I know something to do with the heart and lungs and since my surgery will be a revision from a 1982 stappling, I have to have an upper Gi done again because all the test I did in 2006 are now to old.

Also how about a surgeon cause the one I was going to use retired Adam Namman. I live near Houston.

If your GP is going to be doing the dr supervised visits, make sure that he is in touch with your surgeon and the insurance specialist to make sure all the i's are dotted and t's are crossed.  I missed one appointment and had to add two extra months to the process.  Good thing I didn't need to start over.

You visit your doc once a month and discuss your eating habits, exercise habits and if you have any questions and they document your discussion.  I lost about 12 pounds in 6 months - big whoop-ti-do!

Then your doc submits all that paperwork to the surgeon and they start the pre-surgery testing.  Endoscopy, Colonoscopy (depending upon age & doc), lots of blood work, Chest x-ray, there's one other test, but I forget what it's called where they hook up all the sensors to your body and it's a quick thing.  I also was required to get a pap and a mamogram.  A psych evaluation and nutritional counseling was in order for me to from the surgeons office.   It sounds like a lot but it's really not that bad.

Good luck!

I am also required to do the 6 months of supervised dieting by my insurance. I have chose to go through my surgeons office for my dieting. This way his office has everything they need and as soon as I'm done, it will all be submitted to my insurance. Throughout the 6 months, I will be getting all my tests done that are required for my surgery, plus I have to have my Gallbladder out prior to surgery. This will all be done by the time my 6 months is up, so there is nothing more to do and my insurance company will have everything at the same time. I meet with my dietician for the first time on Sept. 9th, and I should be able to submit everything to my insurance in Feb...

Good Luck this time around. I hope everything goes well and you can have your surgery in a few short months!

I started my process in May and had my surgery this past week.  I didn't have to go through the dieting because I didn't go through the insurance.  However, I did have to lose some weight before scheduling my surgery.  I lost 18 pounds in six weeks. My surgeon's office has a dietician that i would meet with every two weeks and she had great advice.  first of all, keep a food journal.  cut out soda!!  write down everything you eat and drink every day.  studies show people who do this lose more weight overall.  eat more protein like fish and chicken and cut out the carbs and starches.  Most insurance require this doctor supervised diet, but not sure why other than to be a pain in the but, lol.
My pre-op tests were blood work (they took 8 viles!!), ekg, chest xray.  I also had to see a gyn to get on birth control.
There is a father and son team in Houston that has a tv show called big medicine.  They are both Dr Davis.  I'm not sure what hospital they are at but I have watched them perform lots of surgeries and would have to tried to go to them if I was in that area.  I had mine done in Odessa with Dr Davenport.
Good luck, hon!
