Please tell me that upper GI's are suppose to be bad
I had this done today and I have to say if my husband wasnt there holding my hand, I dont think i would have hung around to fini**** That hose would have been out of my throat and probably have smacked the doctor with it on the way out the door. It really scared the crap out of me.
What made matters worse is after the proceedure he dictated notes for my surgeon going on about what a difficult time he had. I couldnt help gagging and swallowing when I wasnt suppose to. I tried not to, trust me it hurt to swallow and gag, I would rather have done neither.
I have a hight tolerence for pain, but not people shoving huge hoses down my throat. I gag when I look at toilet, thats how sensitive I am to that.
Please tell me this is the worse and the rest is just pain from surgery. I dont know if I can take much more of that.

Usually with an upper GI they give the patient some happy drugs like Versed, and also numb your throat. I was barely aware of mine. I'm sorry you had such a hard time!
He gave me something to numb my throat but he must have been out of happy drugs.
In fact I swallowed the stuff for my throat twice because I didnt understand that I wasnt suppose to. My husband had left the room to take our child to the restroom and I didnt have anyone to translate. It was a very scary and frustrating experience.

My upper gi all I had to do was drink the barium.. It wasn't pleasent but there were no tubes involved.

Sorry you had such an unpleasent experience. I have had it done twice and was also given the happy drug. It still was icky...but rest assure if you are having Lap Rny it goes very easy.
I had my gallbladder removed 2 years after my rny and it hurt worse. Rny is "hopefully" a piece of cake. As long as you follow all your doctors rules up to the surgery. You need to shrink your liver to make it much easier for your surgeon. I was put on 2 weeks liquid before had and my doctor was very pleased with the outcome.
Good luck

OMG, thats nasty stuff I was told to swallow must have been barium. My husband looked at me funny when he told me to swi**** around then swallow it. I told him I couldnt. He thought I was being defiant, but I really couldnt. I have made mention many times that I can eat anything, but that was VERY hard to swallow. He only gave me that and a spray to deaden my throat. I got no drugs. must have been why it sucked so bad. I am glad you all got it the right way, my rotten luck for having an icky doctor. Thank you so much for the shoulders to whine on. I have had 2 c-sections and a gall bladder removal and never complained once. they were a piece of cake, do you think comparatively I should be ok here? I mean unless there is an emergency or something. thanks again, you guys are making me feel about better.

No, its not standard although if they suspect you have ulcers (h. pylori positive) or GERD, they are more likely to want a look beforehand. For some surgeons its standard, but for most its not. If you were to have a stricture or something afterward you'd have one though (a suspected stricture is why I had one).
Please remember Tina that I am in France and they do things differently here. In the USA you are given a drug to make you happy and you wouldnt even notice whats going on. I remember when I had that same thing done (except on the other end) in the usa, I remember being happy and I enjoyed watching the screen showing it going down my intestines. If I have to have this same thing again with no meds for a stricture, I think I will pass on having the surgery. Without meds is just too hard. I guess I will have to have my husband call the surgeons office today and ask them about it. My husband gets mad when he has to make calls for me.
I didn't have to have this before surgery but I had an upper gi 24 hours after surgery before I could have anything to drink. I only had to drink the barium and they took pictures. The worst part of it was I was dying of thirst. You will most likely have to do it again after surgery so they can make sure there are no leaks. sorry!
