It's normally a minimum of 10%.. When do you actually see the doc? You may want to consider switching.

Southern Angel,

I am so happy that you came over to this board.  Welcome.

If you have the option of finding another doc, please do so.  Most surgeons do want you to lose a certain amount as it makes the surgery safer for you.  As I think I told you on the other board, I wasn't required to lose and I had to have open surgery, after lap was planned.

Please do all of your research.  RNY is the "gold standard" of the WL surgeries.   This is only my personal opinion but I really feel as if they will find that the DS wil be the recommended surgery for those with extemely high BMI.  AGain, just my personal feeling.

I had RNY and have lost over 200 lbs.  I lost the first 100 in the first 2 months.

You are entering into a long term relationship with your surgeon, please make sure that you are comfortable as well as confident in him.

Best of luck to you.  Please keep posting.

I was asked to lose 40-70lbs. I agree completely with Jeanne, find a surgeon you trust and like. I trust my surgeon, but I don't like him at all, and I dread my visits.

I was told by my doctor at the seminar, that sometimes if a person is over a certain weight, they may be rquired to lose weight due to complications during surgery. My doc like most will be requiring me to do 6 weeks of Optifast prior to surgery.

I wasn't told I had to lose anything prior to the 2 week liquid diet.

Thank you all for your replies, they are greatly appreciated.  I have been so busy with my kids I haven't had a chance to gat here until now.

inkerdoodles asked when do I see the doctor?  That is what has me so mad....I don't get too.  The officew manager told me to call them after I loose the wieght.  No help or adivce in loosing it either.  And when I asked for advice, she just rattled off a few diets. Needless to say, I left the office very confussed and upset.

I agree with some, they only want easy patients.  I am checking out a doctor 3 hours away, so hopefully something will happen with that.  Just another one of life's hurdles.

I was told by the dr on my first visit that I needed to lose about 30lbs and he put me on a modified liquid diet 4 protien shakes and 2 small meals. I really appriciated the help because if I could lose bunches of weight alone I wouldn't need surgery, right? I am sorry that your dr's office was rude to you and I agree with others that you should think about looking for another dr. If they are not helpful now they will probebly not be helpful if you have questions or problems later.

That office manager was very rude to you, and very unprofessional. You didn't deserve that, but most of all..they don't deserve you as a patient. Keep looking honey, you'll find the right doctor for you. Maybe you can try going to the forum for your state and asking them..it may help! Good luck Sweetie!
