Newly diagnosed with Diabetes

After getting all of the results from my pre-op testing I was diagnosed with diabetes; plus I had to take another fasting glucose to confirm diagnosis.  My A1C was 10 and my doctor says I have to get it down to 8 before I can have surgery.  Since this is all new to me, is it hard with meds  and diet to get this level down?

If you cut out all refined carbohydrates from your diet and only eat complex carbohydrates, it shouldn't be too difficult to make that switch in 4 weeks time.  You would basically be changing your diet to a post op diet anyway.  About 4 years ago when I was serious about taking control of my blood sugar, I dropped it from a 11 to a 7 in 5 weeks time by not consuming any refined carbs.  I was basically on the atkins diet without the high fat side of it.  It was amazing that I could change it that fast.

My A1C was 11 before surgery and at my 6 month checkup it was 5.5!

Make sure that any carb-type thing that you eat is high in fiber, don't eat any sugar at all, no white bread, no rice, if it's a pasta use the whole wheat kind it you must have a starch with your meal.  If you can go without it, try a protein, salad, and veggies for dinner.

Good luck on getting the blood sugar down. You can do it!

Before my ac 1 was at 12 and 14.
The doctor added byetta to my meds and i watched what i ate and only drank water and plain tea and in less than 2 mths it was 7.5.
you can do it though  my pcp didnt want me to even have artifical sweetners so i did what she said and no carbs which was hard i loved bread and spaghetti but i knew i couldnt have those after surgery so i did away with them in my diet it worked.
good luck sweetie

I had to bring my A1C down from 8.9 to below 7...My endocrinologist added byetta to my regimine and a low carb diet and I was there in a short 2 weeks....You can do it, I thought I would never be able to..
