I saw my surgeon today.  The nurse couldn't stop talking about how great I was doing and how good I looked and all of that, but Patel was more along the lines of "you should be losing faster than this still"

Hrmmm.

He has asked me to add 2 protein shakes to my day every day until I am at goal, on top of 3 meals. No snacks since I will have the shakes. I got samples of some of the BA protein powders. We shall see. One thing I thought was interesting was that he said long-term studies are showing that the people who had the most to lose were more successful with protein supplementation, whereas the people who had 100 lbs or so didn't show much difference using or not using supplementation.

Whatever, I kind of think he just wants to sell stuff, since his new "independent" office seems to have a lot of protein products for sale, where they never did before.

So back to protein shakes.

hi jen

fwiw, i've continued to drink one (somedays 2) protein shakes daily at 3.5+ years out -- i just like them! no one ever told me to drink them or not drink them. i just found one i really liked and thought - easy way to get some protein in. but i guess if the studies he's talking about are for real, my situation would support them.

hi lynn

i drink advantedge cafe carmel protein shakes -- kind of like an arby's jamoca shake melted down (at least how i remember the arby's jamoca shakes, as it has been a very long time since i've actually had one!)

here's a couple links to buy them. walmart carries the advantedge brand, but i've never found this flavor there.

Ugh...the dreaded protein shakes...  Well, Jenn -- don't let him getcha down... I think you're doing great.... There is so much "pushing" whether it be products or prescriptions it's tough to decide what to trust... On a positive note... Eggface has some really good protein shake recipes...and, even better, she has ice cream recipes using the same stuff... I bough myself an ice cream maker... honestly, the stuff is delicious (the first one I made was mint chocolate chip)... Good Stuff!  Good luck -- Valerie

Interesting. My surgeon says just the opposite, no protein drinks after 1 month post-op because new  long term studies are showing since the protein is already broken down for you, your body doesn't have to work as hard and you lose slower.

Wonder if any DR will ever think the same thing?

Forget the shakes, I'd be eating protein ice cream!

You know, I asked him about that. I asked why some surgeons don't want patients supplementing protein and others insist on it. He sort of danced around it but said there are two schools of thought on the subject.  He is always telling me to eat more, it seems like. Its very counter-intuitive. I guess we'll see. If I start losing faster once I add more protein, fantastic! If not, no harm done unless I happened to gain, which I am not really concerned about YET.

I split the difference on the two schools of thought and started eating 100g of protein a day-- on occasion there's protein ice cream, but I do not drink shakes and I eat very very few bars (too carby.) I'm up to 1000 calories, 100 grams of protein, and my losses have been pretty good-- I am smaller than I ever expected I'd be...so there might be something to it.

( I don't have much choice, my ambumin keeps coming back low, as does total protein.)

My surgeon is of the same school of thought.  He feels that SMO individuals only need protein shakes as their form of nutrition for as long as they can stand continue to drink them.  He feels like the protein shakes and the supplements are enough and our bodies will use up the fat quicker and we will lose faster.  One big problem though - they make me SICK.
