Hi eveyone, I am pretty new to this, and REALLY glad to have found this message board. With a BMI of 66 I feel most at home here, and ya'll are a wealth of great information, inspiration, and emotional support!!( It's relivent from just reading through the posts here.) I have already  had  initial appt. with the surgeon, and have my first appt. with the nut this Wednesday. I am just wondering what I should expect? They took 9 tubes of blood at initial appt. and have already placed me on some b12 and citrical+d suppliments. Any insight is greatly appriciated. Thanks everyone.

Lisa, I think each nut is different, but at mine, the first was a teaching appointment about the surgery and the beginnings of the re-training of how we think about eating.  I had a cool nut and she made it a fun class.  We talked about my eating habits, whether I ate breakfast, how often I ate, etc.  Then discussed vitamins and supplements.

Then later, had a second appointment as we were supposed to study at the binder that they gave us with respect to nutrition and take a test.

There is a lot to learn about eating and what to eat on what stages and again, each doctor and nut is different in their approach to surgery preparation as well as liquid diets pre-surgery, etc.

Don't let it overwhelm you.  It becomes second nature.

Lisa,

Congratulations on really getting the process under way.  Kathy pretty much said what I would have said, so mostly I'm posting to welcome you to the forum!

Like Kathy, at my first nutritionist appointment the nutritionist went through the surgery center eating plan and the different changes I could expect from my eating post-op.  She gave me some ideas of things to start right away such as not drinking with meals, giving up calorie containing beverages, and eliminating snacking.

Since starting my process I have learned that where I went the surgery team (surgeon, primary doc, assistants, etc.) does not agree with the nutritionist or the food plan regarding issues- like snacking in particular.  You may want to try to get a feel for the "unity" of your team - you will find through this process that it seems there are so many different opinions out there and I think that it can only help you if your surgery center is, at least, unified in the information that they give.

My first nut appointment  I got weighed and we went over what the surgeon would like me to lose. Then we went over what I eating at the time, previous diet history and  she gave me a bunch of books (emotional eating, one on exercise, and the other on foods and portions).  We talked about how to better my eating and they also gave me a pedometer and we talked about increasing my activity.

Thanks ladies. At least now maybe I am not quite as apprehensive about this appt. LOL!! I have only one vice in life, and that's my diet coke. Am I gonna have to give that up?? (not sure those that have to put up with me can handle that)

I know in my case - suregons rules - it had to go.  I started to give it up when I went to the seminar the hospital held on WLS surgery.  I went from diet pepsi  (I use to drink 3 - 4 of the 24oz bottles per day) and started to mix in the caffeine free dp then once I was all caffeine free - I quit soda all together.  That was back in April and I have not had any since.  Do I miss it?  No I dont and I thought I would mourn it's passing - lol.  I tried to take a sip of hubby's while we were on vacation and it did not taste good to me.
