Surgery is over & I am back at home!

Well, I did have the RNY surgery on Aug. 5 as planned.  Apparently I was under too long and I didn't want to wake up, so I ended up in ICU for a little over a day.  Doc had to "undo" my previous lap nissen (for a hiatal hernia, surgery done in 2000)...because of that, my surgery ended up being 3 hours and 45 minutes.

So...now I am home and having a hard time getting protein shakes down.  Any suggestions?  Anything else that I can have right now to boost my protein level? Everything I have tried has made me feel sick...had ordered from Vitalady, tried the Atkins Advantage and SF Carnation Instant Breakfast.  So far I have only been able to tolerate the Instant Breakfast. My throat is still pretty sore from having the respirator in for so long, also...maybe that is why everything tastes so terrible?? Looking at previous posts....protein shakes just tend to be pretty crappy!

Anyway, thanks for the good thoughts and please let me know if you have any ideas on how to get thru the next few days of liquids!

Thanks,

Penny

Congrats on getting the worst part over! You are on your way now.
I had the sleeve..but I know the first few days...getting anything down was difficult.  From what I was told..in the first week the water is most important so you don't dehydrate.
It gets better, so  hang in there!

Isopure has some fruit flavored protein drinks that are 24 oz (I think that's about right) and 40 g of protein in them.  Is it the milk or protein taste or what's getting to you?  I was able to tolerate Unjury but that takes a few days to get in as well but they do have samples so you don't have to order a whole tub of it, and they also have unflavored.

Cottage cheese, fage greek yogurt, not sure what stage you are in right now.  I was able to eat soft foods when I left the hospital.

I wish you luck and keep us posted.  Ahem...and welcome to the losers bench!

Welcome home!!  And an even bigger WELCOME to the Loser's Bench!!   I would say if you can tolerate the Instant Breakfast that's good enough for right now!  Drink that and your water, let your throat heal and soon you'll be able to tolerate other things!  Rest and sip and walk around your house whenever you can!

Keep us updated!

Welcome home! My surgery was about the same length of time and my throat killed me for about a week. Sipping on hot decaf tea made it much better. The only shakes I did were the carnation breakfast. others were just to thick. Welcome home and keep us updated. It will get better!

Welcome home.  Sorry to hear that you had a little glitch, but it sounds like you're well on your way to recovery.  Keep drinking water and the CIB - you'll get better and better as time pases.

congrats on your surgery... and get ready for a great ride.
My doctor told me not to worry about protein that first week, just make sure to get as much
water in as possible..
Hope your feeling better soon.

Congrats on your surgery! The first week I was only able to tolerate the SF Carnation instant breakfast, SF popsicles, SF pudding and SF jello.

Sending lots of good thoughts your way!

Welcome Home!!

Have you tried Nectar Protein?  Its made by Syntrax and it is more of a "juice" consistancy rather than a thick shake.  Fuzzy navel is my favorite flavor. It has 21 gms of protein in it.
