I have a Surgery date
I have a surgery date Sept 3/08 12pm . I am soooo excited , scared, relieved, so many emotions all at once . I start opti fest on the 13 for 3 weeks . Thats going to be the challenge ,but I am ready for this . I am soo looking forward to having my life back thats what Iam focusing on the liquid iet is not forever but the changes will be forever .
I don't have any surgery scheduled yet. I attended my info seminars back in Oct and Nov, but I haven't been able to quit smoking yet. My doc requires patients to be non-smokers for 6 months before she will schedule the surgery.
Meanwhile, I decided to start my journey w/o surgery. I have been on Medifast for almost 3 months and found it has been pretty easy for me. As long as I find time to get in all the meals I am not hungry. Some day, like today, I get busy/distracted at work and forget to eat. Then a bit later I feel awful as my blood sugar plummetts. So I try not to let that happen.
At some point if this tool stops working, and if I have been successful in quitting smoking, I will definitely get in line for surgery.
I don't know much about Optifast. Is it just shakes or do you have other options?

Patty, a coworker of mine when I worked in WA had to quit smoking, and her doc gave her some kind of pill that, in her words, "made cigarettes taste like warm a s s ."
Is this something you have tried (the pills, not the warm a s s !)?
I admire anyone who can quit smoking. My parents both smoked like chimneys, and both died from lung illnesses. I'm glad smoking never appealed to me, mostly because I hate coughing and I spent my whole childhood watching my folks cough all day long as they chain smoked their Pall Malls.
Keep forging ahead!

For me the weight and the smoking are all part of the same bad coping mechanisms I've leaned on over the years when faced with stress. I've quit smoking several times (but then, all smokers can probably say that). -The 2 longest periods were 8 years and 3 years. Both times I quit smoking, I gained significant amounts of weight. No smokie, more eatie.
My most recent quit period was from January-April of this year and I did use Chantix that time. I'll do so again. That's the med that satisfies the same brain chemistry function as nicotine and blocks the effectiveness of nicotine at the same time. I haven't tried the pills that make "butts" taste like "warm ass" (sorry, couldn't resist that one)
My downfall this spring was a difficult software project, a new boss (who didn't last), a new assistant who couldn't work independently, a bad SAD episode and taxes .... well, I started smoking again in April.
Now I have 2 assistants, both of whom take direction well and can work independently. I now report to our deputy CIO, who had been my boss in the past when we both were lower grades. Just launched a new set of web sites. Now looks like a good time to climb back on that horse.
Hubby says he will quit with me. He sees how it is impacting BOTH of us. He helped me through the longest quit period I've had (he was a former smoker, but not smoking when we met). He's had long smoke-free periods himself and is ready to stop too.
Thanks for the encouragement.
