Starbucks Viviano review

Sunday is our day to visit Starbucks before we go to church.   Yes, we are renegades and take our coffee into the sanctuary.

We were rushed and I forgot to grab by SBD protein bar.  I figured I'd just have a late lunch or get a latte at SB for some protein.

Was greeted with the marketing push right on the door as we went in promoting the new smoothie.

There are 2 kinds.  Chocolate Banana and Mango Banana
The chocolate banana has the mocha syrup and no, they don't have the SF mocha anymore but that's a good thing because it sucked.

So I chose the Mango Banana.   There is no additional sugar in the Mango Banana.  It's all natural sugars and I don't usually have an issue with natural sugars.

It's made with whey protein powder (says it's proprietary and they didn't know if it was whey protein isolate or not), a whole banana, natural Naked Mango juice (no added sugars) and I had them substitute skim milk for the 2%.  Now the nutrition info that I'm going to post below doesn't take into consideration the change from 2% to skim as their website doesn't allow for that change.

It was OK.  The protein was not noticeable tastewise, but I detected a slight grittyness that usually comes in a lower quality protein (from my experience...I'm an Unjury snob).  The shake itself, tastewise was pretty good.  It's 16 oz, and it took me about an hour to drink it all.

So here's the scoop...
w/2% milk
Calories  250
Fat 15 (I know I saved 5G with the skim milk here)
Sodium 120 mg
Carbs 47 (whoa, I was scared of this when I saw it)
  Sugars 32 g
Fiber 6g
Protein 16g  (chocolate has 21 but they use the regular mocha syrup - watchout!)

All in all, for a quick fix to a stupid mistake like forgetting my protein bar, it was an ok trade off.  I wouldn't go out of my way to purchase one.  I'd rather make my own because they are so much better and cheaper. I think they are $4!  But what isn't at Starbucks anyway.

But if you are stuck, need to get some protein in, and have $4 you want to put in Starbucks coffers, then they aren't too bad.

My husband likes the orange banana mango, but I find it too acidic and slightly bitter.  The chocolate banana actually has less sugar and barely tastes sweet.  I got one a few weeks ago and it was decent, overpriced, but decent.  I didn't dump and at the time absolutely nothing would settle and it was quite soothing to the pouch.

I thought the same thing about the mango banana that it needed more sweetener.  I told Karl that it could probably stand the addition of a sweetener packet.

Another odd thing, they had the nutritional content on a handy dandy printed card that was missing the carbohydrates/sugar content. I strayed away from the chocolate one because of the mocha syrup.  funny...

Like I said, it worked for me in a pinch but I wouldn't make it a habit.

Thanks for the review. Think I'll stick with something else.

Too much sugar for me, natural or not, sugar is sugar.

back early this past summer I was drinking a banana chocolate every day for lunch (heck I oculd add protein****IL I found out the sugar + carb content...I stopped that habit immediately....then they brought out the strawberry flavoured...and when I asked the sugar & carb content on that I just about had a heart attack..

definately NOT something that anyone who has had weight loss surgery should be consuming on a regular basis....
