how many have problems with sugar??
I am only 3 1/2 weeks out and am wondering how many have issues with sugar.
My husband can eat sugar, meats, etc. He is 7 months out. He eats small quantities but can eat a cookie, a piece of cake, etc...
I have not yet tried to eat anything of the sugar nature yet and to be honest am very scared. I am not a huge sweet lover but would love to know if I will have problems with it...I have a few friends that have issues and a few that don't..

I can eat small amounts of things w/ sugar, but honestly have to be pretty careful. I do okay if I share a dessert w/ one or two people after I've had a protein-filled meal. And I can have one cookie or a small piece of cake on it's own without a problem most of the time. But if I eat too much sugar, I do "dump." For me, that involves feeling extremely lethargic and my pulse will sometimes race up to 100 BPM (my usual resting pulse is 50-55 BPM).
I did not try any processed sugar until about 8 months after my surgery, and honestly it just doesn't taste the same any more. When I want a little something sweet, I tend to seek things that are tart and just slightly sweetened - usually things w/ lemon or lime bases.
Fear of dumping is a good thing - it's one of the reasons this surgery helps some people kick their addiction to sugar and processed carbs; negative reinforcement! You can eat it, but oh will you pay the price... You won't know how your body will react until you try sugar. Some folks choose to simply never find out. Others, like me, were willing to test the boundaries....

I have never eaten anything that has more than 14 grams of sugar per serving, and 99% of the time I stay in the single digits.
No clue if I'll dump because I haven't pushed the limits over the 14 (and that was really pushing it in my book).
I was/am/always will be a sugar addict, I'm afraid if I know I don't dump I won't stop.

Yes I have problems with sugar. Early out it was basically any sugar amount over 7g. Now, as long as I have something dense with it, I can have a little more. A cookie would still probably make me dump, but a few bites of a cookie is ok. Honestly, I'm with Kellie, it doesn't taste as good now and when I do want it I want something mildly sweet and fruity, especially orange or lemony tartness. Early out though, I dumped on fruit. Now I don't seem to.
For me it depends on the t ype of sugar. I can eat a whole mango (well almost) without dumping, but a cookie made me barf. I can eat one hershey's kiss, but haven't ventured beyond that. One's enough! Be careful not to get used to eating that kind of stuff. You may get back in your rut again.
I've found I don't crave any of it at all any more. So that's a good thing!

I agree with everybody, after 1 1/2 yrs I started trying sugar found out that I don't dump.
Wish I had never found that out.. Please trust me , stay away if you can.
I have gained 25lbs since I discovered I can eat sugar. I am still happy with my 263 pounds loss,
but wish I could get those 25 lbs off..
Good luck with your journey..

So far, sugar makes me dump. I don't want to find out like our dear friend Lynn that I can eat sugar, so I stay away from it. Dealing with bread is bad enough, I don't need to factor all those lovely things like donuts, cake, etc. into the equation! I wish I had never gone back to eating bread, life was a lot easier as a new post-op when I was afraid of eating bread. I'm keeping sugar in the "Fear Factor" section of my brain.

Thanks for all of your replys...I am not a big sugar nut to begin with. I can take or leave most desserts. I have no rpoblems baking with splenda and making things that I can have. So far I have not craved sweets or carbs, I am craving having to actually chew some food and eat meat and some veggies, especially a salad...but that will have to wait until next week...
I am very happy with my current state of being...to actually have to work at eating and not work at keeping from eating is something entirely new to me...I actually can't believe it is time to eat again most of the time....
I am still very amazed by how little I am eating and actually feeling full...I can actually listen to my body and judge when I have had enough to eat..Yesterday I had to spit a mouthful out because after it was in there I realized if I swallowed it wasn't going to go anywhere...and said WOW, that was different..

Lori,
For me, I made an arrangement with myself that I will not try concentrated sugar until my birthday which will put me at about 5.5 months post-op. Based on what I've heard from others - that sugar doesn't taste good after you get it out of your system - I'm seriously thinking that I won't even try it then. That said, there were some cookies at an office party that looked pretty good the other day. I guess for now I will keep my commitment and then reevaluate it when the time comes. I don't have trouble with *anything* else. My pouchie puts up with a lot from me (compared to what I hear from others, not that I'm pushing the limits of it)- that's really good and I suppose can be really bad too since it especially continues to like carbs (toasted bread, brown rice,1-2 bites of pasta is OK, etc.)
I did talk with my nutritionist about the amount of sugar to be concerned about. As I've been shopping I see that a lot of things have sugars in the 10-15g per serving range (like fruit, baked beans, BBQ sauce, some spaghetti sauces, etc.) She said that these probably won't be a problem- especially beans and fruit because the fiber generally "tames" the way the body processes the sugar. Ultimately though, we are all different, and you have to try everything and see how your body responds to it.
