How did your lab tour go yesterday?  Did the students have a lot of questions?  Did the time go fast?

Are the pre/post-workout snacks helping you?  How do you like the fiber one bars?  I've seen them at the store, but haven't tried them yet.  With 9 grams of fiber, they'd be a good choice on days when I'm not getting enough fiber from my food.
Here's what's on my plate today:

Breakfast:  1 c. 1% milk in my coffee, 1 packet Quaker Weight Control oatmeal

Snack #1:  3/4 c. low-fat cottage cheese, 3 tbsp. SF preserves, 2 large, diced strawberries, 2 oz. blueberries

Snack #2:  medium banana, 1 tbsp. natural peanut butter

[workout #1:  yoga]

Lunch:  6 oz. broiled salmon, ~3/4 c. steamed broccoli

Snack #3:  6 oz. Dannon light'n'fit vanilla yogurt, 1/4 c. Kashi granola, 2 large, diced strawberries, 2 oz. blueberries

Snack #4:  1 slice whole-grain bread, 3 slices smoked turkey, 1 slice low-fat cheese

[workout #2:  cutting the grass, yard work]

Dinner:  4 oz. egg noodles, 5 oz. beef stroganoff, salad, 2 tbsp. light salad dressing

Snack #6:  2 sugar-free fudgesicles

Total calories: 2019
Carbs:  239.2
Fats:  68.1
Fiber:  31.0
Protein:  133.0

The tour was fine, I wasn't worried about it, just irritated that I had to do it.  They didn't have too many questions and they were mostly about computer security in general.  The time did not go fast, but it was fine, I talked about the history of the field and then the projects going on in our lab.  Pre and post-workout snacks are not helping anything.  My dizziness is worse than ever, and at night I have bed spins.  I am going to make an appt with my PCP soon anyway for a follow-up regarding my prescriptions, so I am going to ask him about inner ear stuff then.  It seems like a lot of people on the boards complain about this so it may just be part of the process, but I stopped my treadmill workout today because of it.  Eating more complex carbs with my protein seems to help with the blood sugar at least, and my concentration.  My blood sugar is manageable as long as I don't go too long without eating.  This surgery just traded one set of health problems for another I think.  I am much stupider since surgery - something about the combination of anesthesia and malnutrition just kills brain cells right and left apparently.

Ask your doctor about BPV (benign positional vertigo),  My sister had symptoms similar to yours and it turned out she had BPV.  She was given a series of neck and head positional exercises to relieve the dizziness/bed spins and they did the trick.  Nary a problem since then. Kix

One of my girlfriends has BPV - it can be a hassle to figure out, but it's manageable....

Do you think you may be developing reactive hypoglycemia?  I've read a number of posts about folks who've developed that post-op, and it seems to be becoming a more common thing for our population...  But with the bed spins, seems like Kix's suggestion of some type of vertigo may be more likely.   Either way, I hope you figure out what's going on soon, so you can just get on with living and loving life -  Kellie

Yes, I probably do have reactive hypoglycemia.  I've gotten enough low sugar readings that my doctor agrees, but to confirm it I'd have to do a test where you eat or drink a bunch of sugar and then they draw blood for a while (glucose tolerance test).  A LOT of sugar, as in, keep the ambulance nearby because I am going to think I am dying amounts of sugar.  Also, I am still having trouble with my insurance (hopefully cleared up this week, I talked to them yesterday) regarding pre-existing condition clause.  I sent proof of previous insurance but they never got it (fax).  Apparently BCBS feels that being alive is a pre-existing condition because the only thing they've covered so far is 2 office visits.  They didn't even cover my pap smear (although that was taken care of yesterday) or even the basic blood work like cholesterol and CBC.  So even if I wanted to confirm the hypoglycemia, I wouldn't try until this is sorted out.   I don't think that the dizziness is related to sugar - the few times I've had very low blood sugar I've gotten really anxious, like an impending sense of doom, and very shaky and I don't make a lot of sense.  I also seem to start sweating profusely  and get an upset tummy.

Oh, and I only like the chocolate fiber one bars - the others I've tried were so/so tasting, but maybe that's a good thing because the chocolate ones taste sooooo good, too good.  I try not to have one every day but its such an easy and tasty way to get in the fiber.  I also like the little yogurt cups pretty well, but they don't have as much fiber - they do have more protein though and fewer calories.  But adding benefiber to yogurt works fine too, if you eat yogurt anyway.

Here's my plan for the day: B- 1oz. string cheese, 1/4 cup cashews L- 2-3oz. leftover rotisserie chicken, 1/4 c. applesauce D- 2-3oz. salmon, 1/4c. cauliflower with cheese sauce I'm trying to boost my protein.  I haven't entered everything in to dailyplate yet so I'm not sure how it comes out calorie and protein wise. I'm supposed to be still eating low fiber, but pretty soon I am also going to have to think about fiber.  Feeling pretty miserable without sufficient fiber.

** WARNING: Bathroom discussion Some of you know that I have been following the Medifast diet as a start to my journey. Boy, did I screw up today. I ran out of Medifast bars before my next order arrives. Now I have plenty of shakes, drinks, soups, oatmeal and such, but darn it, I wanted a BAR today. So off I trudge to Safeway looking for something I can eat for my 2PM feeding. I finally found some that had good protein and the cals were similar to my MF bars. Well, I got back to work at 3 and was famished, so I had 2 bars pretty close together. I've done that just fine with MF bars. Not this time... About 30 minutes later I started feeling lots of gastric disturbances. I was pretty tired anyway from working on a software project until the wee hours, so I decided to head home for a nap and then do some work at home tonight. Half way home, the rumbling gets worse and the pains start. I did make it inside the house, but didn't quite make it to the potty. I was really sick at both ends. First awful poo and then I also threw up. For those of you who have been on Medifast or something similar - what the heck is up with that? Did you ever have anything similar? Do different companies products not mix well? I think the bars were Slimfast, but I might be mistaken. Is it a mistake to eat 2 so close together? This was similar to the reaction I've had in the past when accustomed to a low-fat diet and then I eat some fat. I hope my tummy feels better soon. B - MF Cappachino S - MF Swiss Chocolate Shake L - BAD BAD ALIEN BAR
S - BAD BAD ALIEN BAR D - ? Salmon & asparagus were planned - not sure if I can eat it S - MF pudding
