Clumsy!!!

I feel like I am more clumsy this year than last year.  I mow my own lawn. I do have a rider. But I have to push mow the ditches and in the tight areas. Last year at 468lbs I mowed (although a lot slower than this year) the ditches and never had a problem with my balance. I was firmly planted when I would push the mower across the bank. This year I have fallen twice. I have not injured myself, I just loose my balance and topple over. Whats up with that??? Is it maybe all the weight kept me firmly planted and now I don't have that to my advantage??? Just curious, has this happened to any of you???

I haven't had the same problem, but it may be happening because your center of gravity is changing.  As you lose weight, your center of gravity will shift - at least mine did.  If that's what's going on, you may find it helpful to do some exercises that help with your overall sense of balance.  There are some good, relatively easy exercises you can do on a stability ball that will help your sense of balance.  Here's a link to some general info at about.com:   http://exercise.about.com/library/blbeginnerball.htm http://physicaltherapy.about.com/od/balanceexercises/qt/Bala nceEx.htm http://physicaltherapy.about.com/od/balanceexercises/p/Balan ceEx.htm http://seniorliving.about.com/od/basicexerciseseries/ss/bala nceexercise_5.htm Please ignore the fact that some of these articles are written for seniors - they just happen to be a segment of the population that tends to have balance problems!  I hope some of this information is helpful!!! I am totally with you on this - between fainting twice and falling on my butt several times, I spend a lot more time on the ground these days.  I actually have been working on my balance a lot because I don't like holding on the handles of the treadmill, I want to feel confident walking without them. One of the things I've been doing, several times a day, is seeing how long I can stand on each foot.  At first I was really bad, weaving around and falling over.  Now, about 2 weeks later, I can balance for quite a while.  I think it probably is about finding your new center of gravity... which will be changing until you reach a stable weight.

I'm actually doing ok with this area.  One of my other friends asked me if I was having this problem too.  Seems to be pretty prevelant for us over 50 BMI people.  Maybe it's just my wide hips that keep me grounded.   I do a lot of work with the exercise ball for my core and perhaps that helps me with my balance. I've even started doing push ups with my legs on the ball and all of my weight on my hands.  Good balance exercise!
