Unflavored Protein
Hi All!! Happy Saturday
I am getting really close to surgery on the 27th and I was wondering what is the best unflavored protein powder and where can I get it. I usually just buy vanilla but that would be really icky in mashed taters and cream of broccoli soup
. Also did y'all eat baby food meat or just puree it yourself?

I didn't mind protein before surgery, but afterwards they were all completely unpalatable to me, so I'd recommend not buying large amounts of anything (I've got three kinds of protein here I never use) - you can buy samples at bariatriceating.com and a few other places and then have them on hand after surgery to see what you like best. A lot of people like unjury unflavored, but I haven't tried it. I still can't seem to make myself drink protein shakes (although I had one in the hospital that was ok, I don't know what brand it was though, and my friend at work had dessert protein in vanilla bean that was ALMOST tolerable).
As far as pureeing - I was also very disgusted with that idea *shiver* I felt like I was pregnant after surgery, any strong smells, tastes, textures, even thoughts of certain foods made me nauseas. People's perfumes were absolutely intolerable. The idea of pureeing meat, especially tuna, made me sick (still does). I lived on peanut butter, avocado, and ricotta cheese, during the whole pureed stage. Some hot cereals were ok too (vanilla whey powder in cream of wheat was bearable). Cheese in cream of wheat was ok too (thanks Kix). JoTeddie had a recipe for a pureed chicken soup that I thought about trying - she just used canned chicken and broth, whizzed it up, and sipped it hot. I'd use maybe some roasted chicken or something for more flavor. Another thing I did was get low sodium canned soups and strain out the contents - it had more flavor and substance than broth that way.
If you eat cream soups, make sure they are low fat! Honestly you don't have any idea what you are going to like or hate after surgery, its trial and error, so don't stock up too much on anything! You can always send someone to the store for something you liked particularly.
I too have heard of people using the Unjury unflavored but have been told that just because it is unflavored doesn't mean it doesn't have a taste. Good Luck! My dr is very specific about the pureed stage and insists meats do not puree so I am allowed pureed veggies and fruits only, but truthfully couldn't even imagine eating that right now. I am just starting to be able to tolerate water. Tomorrow I start my protein shakes - everyday is a new adventure!
I was very fortunate that I could eat eggs and cheeses, moist fish for the first 3 weeks. I tried the unflavored protein 1X and I didn't care for it, but my taster was all fouled up after surgery. I survived on tuna for the first 6 weeks. I am so sick of albacore tuna I haven't eaten it since then.
If I didn't get my protein in by eating (took about 2 months to do that), I just drank a protein shake to supplement. I ususally got about 1/2 of my protein by eating.
Good luck!
Before and after surgery, I spent a ton on every protein out there. It wasnt until a few months after surgery that I discovered Optimum Nutrition Any Whey. It is virtually tasteless. You can even add it to foods and cook with it. But all I do is add it to 4ounces of Hood Calorie Countdown chocolate milk, and 4 oz of 1% milk - I used to do 8oz. of the chocolate, but it was too chocolatey for me, so now I milk it down. It's perfect, tasteless, tastes just like a glass of chocolate milk - I mix in 1 scoop of AnyWhey, or sometimes 2, and use a mini wire whisk I purchased from Pampered Chef. In the beginning, I was just using a spoon, but now have the whisk and it frothes it up pretty good. I start every morning with this shake, and have been for the past 12 months +.
They sell the Any Whey at GNC, but their price has doubled in the last year. So I found this website, and the prices can't be beat on the 60oz. bottle.

Good luck!! Let me know if you have any questions!
