What is/was YOUR pre-op diet???
Hello everyone. I want to start by saying that I know that every surgeon and their requirements vary, and you should follow your surgeon, but I am curious as to what others are doing.
For the basic high-protein liquid diet:
-protein shakes
-High Protein Slim Fast/Ensure/Boost
-no sugar added carnation instant breakfast
-sugar free jello and popsicles
-low sodium broth
Is there anything else that can be included into the HP liquid diet that others are using?
I have seen more lenient surgeons allow:
-no sugar added applesauce
-cottage cheese
-lowfat/sugar free yogurt and liquid yogurt
-sugarfree/fat free pudding
Anything else?
Thank you to everyone for your input!!

My liquid diet is pretty much the same as the first list you gave but I can also have cream soups (like tomato), liquid yogurt, and plain milk.
I'm scheduled to begin LD on 5/22 (for 3 weeks). I tend to get pretty crabby when I dramatically change something in my life (like when I quit smoking years ago) so I've pretty much decided that I'm going to do a liquid protein shake diet for meals with LS broth and SF jello and popsicles and Crystal Light in between. The less options that I give myself then the less I will use my crabbiness as an excuse to cheat.

I didn't do a liquid diet until 24hrs before surgery. Up until then for me it was 2-3 protein shakes per day plus 4oz lean protein for dinner with all the veggies, cooked and raw, that I wanted (no butter, dressing, sauce, etc)
My surgeon wanted me to lose 10% of my weight before surgery (53 lbs), so my HMO put me on a modified Optifast program (around 1100 calories per day) which they paid for because it was deemed medically necessary. (Yay!) At 120 calories per shake or bar, I was eating every two hours, just like a newborn! Some days, I had to force myself to get in my full calories because it seemed I'd have just eaten one shake and it was time for another one.
To make a long story short, I lost the 53 lbs so quickly that they weren't ready to schedule me for surgery yet. By then, I was used to the Optifast and asked to stay on it until surgery. I ended up losing 123 lbs by surgery day. It was easier to lose those 123 lbs than it is to lose these last 35! ARGH!

I only had to do liquids for 3 days prior to surgery. The month before the 3 days, I was on a diet of 2 protein shakes in addition to 3 meals a day. The three meals were to consist of 2 oz lean protein, 1/2 cup steamed vegatables and 1 small fruit. I was dumb and cheated during the month prior to surgery and only lost 7 lbs.
My friend was on a diet similar to yours and lost 18 lbs in 2 weeks! What a great way to get a giant head start on the weight loss!
