Road Trip!

I love road trips!  My maternal grandmother loved nothing more than to get in the car and go somewhere.  My parents hated road trips, and out of my siblings, I'm the only one with the "Let's go!" gene from Nana.  I'd drive somewhere every weekend if I had unlimited cash and a brand new car. I'm very excited to report that I have talked my sister into a road trip the end of May! We have decided to go to South Dakota.  My original plan (when I thought I'd be going by myself) was to drive up to Deadwood for a couple of days of gambling.  Now that she is coming with me, I need to plan stuff other than gambling.  We are spending two days around Deadwood and two in Custer.  Of course, Mt Rushmore is on the agenda. For those of you who have visited (or live near) the western side of South Dakota, any recommendations on fun things to do or see?  Any really tacky things to avoid (or things so tacky one really needs to see them just for a good laugh?)  And no, we won't be near Sturgis in time for the annual motorcycle rally!  Kix

I road trips!  Always have.  When I was a kid my aunt and uncle would take me for 2 weeks every summer and we'd go to random places and camp most of the nights along the way.  I've been to nearly every state because of that - in South Dakota we did the Rushmore thing and then we went to Montana and played paleontologist  at a big dinosaur dig.  (My aunt is a dino buff and I like to play in the dirt).   I wish Montana wasn't so darn cold, I'd move there in a second, gorgeous!

Is the Wall Drug Store still around??? I know is it in Wall SD, but not sure where that is in relation to where you are going to be. I went there in HS with my parents...it was pretty neat.

Sounds like fun.  Our options have to be around this area.  I doubt we'll ever get up to that part of the US. We are trying to plan our Memorial Weekend trip.  Our options are: New Orleans Destin Beach Georgia Mountains Savannah GA I'm leaning towards the beach because it's very close and about 1.5 hours.  Not really interested in a road trip for a 3 day weekend!
