It varies by insurance. Most of the time you have to have your doc write an rx and the meter will be free. The strips, it depends. The best thing to do is check with your insurance. I know a lot of times they do pay when its diabetes but if the diagnosis is hypoglycemia I'm not sure. I've heard mixed reports.
Medically necessary.. Ususally.. Give your IC a call, they can tell you specifically for your plan. If it is covered, the meter is usually FREE from your dr's office.. and the strips would be covered at the same rate as your office copay .. even if your rx copay is cheaper NYS law made it the office visit copay.. This one I know from experience.

Estelle,
I have had diabetes for years and my insurance has always covered the cost of the meters, strips, lancets and insulin/medication. At one point I did not have perscription coverage (change of jobs) but had the basic health insurance, New York State requires a rider for diabetic supplies.
I have paid a co-payment for the meters and depending on the insurance company I have not even paid a co-payment when picking it up. Always paid a co-payment for the strips and lancets. I hope this helps.
