Yes - I had a Polar F4, which costs about $90. Which I lost at the gym a couple weeks ago
I don't usually lose things, especially expensive things, so I just kept kicking myself in the butt and debating whether I should spend the money on another monitor. I really, really missed having the information you get from a monitor, so I coughed up the money and bought a new one.
Of course, I bought a more expensive model than I had before with more bells and whistles - it's a Polar F11. In addition to giving me my heart rate while I work out, it calculates the calories I'm burning based on my age, weight, height, and heart rate. That's a LOT more accurate than what the cardio machines will tell you your burning in terms of calories. Also, it stores information about my workout, so I can tell for each week how much time I spend in my "light" heart rate zone, "moderate" zone, and "hard" zone. It also has a built in fitness "test" that approximate your V02, which is an estimator about how fit you are (the higher your V02 the better). Since I'm interested in seeing just how fit I can become, I thought that information would help me track improvements in my fitness. The F11 cost around $160 and for me, it was worth it.
Edited to provide a bit more information that's responsive to Estelle's question -> Both the F4 and F11 come with a transmitter that's on a elastic band that goes under your chest. It fits nicely under the band of my sports bras. Then there's a "watch" that you wear and the transmitter sends your heart rate to the watch so you can see your rate and look at your data when you're done. Some cardio equipment have built-in receivers so if you're wearing a transmitter you can see your heart rate on the equipment even if you aren't wearing the watch.
