EGD scheduled for Friday

Well, it's been an interesting week.  I went back to work last Thursday, and managed to not have my butt completely kicked.  However, I've continued to have nausea.  That started the day after my week 4 checkup when they upgraded me from soft food to real food and added supplements and Actigall to prevent gallstones.  I got to the point where I became nauseated "whenever".  Before eating, while eating, after eating, drinking tap water (bottle was ok), drinking warm water, drinking crystal lite (propel was ok), etc.   I finally called MD and they took me off the Actigall last week Monday.  Mixed feelings as I had known gallstones pre-op.  Well, the nausea continued and was only helped (slightly) by me not eating as much.  With my program I'm not allowed protein drinks and had been told I needed 75-80gm protein.  That wasn't going to happen.  I also noticed that at 6 weeks out I wasn't physically able to eat the same amount of food (i.e. yogurt, chicken) that I could at 2 weeks.  I should also mention that after 3 weeks they ordered an upper GI because I complained of heartburn, which they said I shouldn't have.  It didn't show a stricture but there was a bit of narrowing leaving the pouch. Well, I called Monday to fill them in that the lack of Actigall didn't solve the problem.  Now they want me to go in for a scopin' and possible dilation on Friday.  I've never vomited and really was hoping this was just a phase.  It's so hard for me to compare to other people because I can't do protein drinks, therefore the "quantity/quality" of food is so different.   I've had 4 scopes in my life so it's not the procedure in general that scares me.  I am, however, afraid of Friday.  The GI doc is the only one the bariatric dept uses to do this, but I've become quite protective of my little pouch and I don't want a dilation that isn't really needed if this is just a normal phase.  And I am just getting over my fear of dying after surgery (2/21/08) and now I'm kinda freakin'.  And oh yea, Friday is my birthday. Thanks for letting me babble... -dawn -dawn

Hi, Dawn.  I'm sorry to hear you're having issues with nausea.  I had some problems with that, but nothing like what you've got going on.   A friend of mine had very serious issues w/ nausea after her surgery; she wound up going through 3 or 4 different types of medication trying to find something that would help minimize the nausea.  She eventually found something that helped, but she had dropped a lot of weight super fast because she couldn't get enough nutrition.  She was not as proactive about dealing with the problem as she should have been (in my opinion), and it took her almost a year to really recover and be healthy again.   So I'm super proud of you for being proactive about dealing with what's going on.  I can't tell from your post, but has your doc tried you on any anti-nausea medication?  If not, you may want to talk to him/her about that as well.   Please keep us posted on how you are going -  Kellie

Geez Dawn....so sorry you have to go thru all that.  Have a Happy Birthday anyway and keep reminding yourself that this too shall pass. You are doing the right thing to have it all checked out. You don't want to become malnourished and get even sicker! Focus on what next year will be like for your birthday and how thin you'll be...please let us know how it all goes and what the problem was. You'll be in my thoughts & prayers.  HUGS  Jeanine
