Quirky Things About Your Town?

My personal favorite in rural PA was what we called "Bathtub Mary"s. Someone plants an old cast iron tub faucet side down so it forms a grotto-like alcove for their Virgin Mary status. Haven't seen any in Oregon - must be because we have less Roman Catholics.

That's so funny about cars - it seems so normal to me and I have done it many times myself. The one thing I always notice are people in these old beat up cars who are carrying a mountain bike that probably cost more than the car - these people have their priorities straight And something that is unique to climbers/hikers here... when you get your truck stolen, you are more concerned with the equipment inside than the actual truck. I have had a few friends that this has happened to and each time they freak out about their climbing/outdoor equipment being stolen more than the truck. (although honestly, you can spend just as much on the equipment as on a truck - one guy I know spent $12,000 last year!) You can get a new truck, but when you have to break in that new equipment, it is a pain! Oh, and the whole "14er" thing... while the term is used in other places, it's a huge deal here in Colorado. If you don't  know what a 14er is in this state, people look at you pretty funny. And just about everyone wants to "bag a 14er." I just love this state.

What you said about beaters and expensive sports equipment rings true.  I was driving home from Black Hawk on 70  the other day and around Floyd Hill I saw an old Suburu wagon in the slow lane that, I swear to God, was held together with duct tape!  The windows were duct taped in place, the hood was held down with duct tape, and the doors (except for the driver's side) was duct taped. The guy obviously watches too much Red Green on TV. Meanwhile, dude has skis, snowshoes, and what looked like an $8000 mountain bike attached to various racks on the car.  I love it here, too! We live in Butte ,Montana during the summer months.   DH & myself were both born & raised  in Butte which is shadowed by the Rocky Mountains . It's a former mining town which is known around the state  for it's hellraising , partying & HUGE celebrations .On  St. Patricks Day, July 4th & Evil Knievel  Days Butte's population grows from about 30,000 people  to about 70 or 80,000 people . Butte is also known as the city which is a mile high & a mile deep due to the former Copper mining pit  located right in the middle of the city. We currently reside in a VERY small  Copper mining town  in Arizona. The population is about  10,000  &  the mining  company owns literally every home & business here including the schools ,parks ,bowling alley ,health clinic etc.No body owns their own house here in Morenci but it looks like a regular small town because each family decorates their home individually inside & out. Some of the local families have been here for several generations.  Because we are fairly isolated from the major Arizona cities the company provides all of the  the homes  located here for a very low cost of $181.00 - $ 250.00 per month  for a 3 bedroom  house &  garage.
