Im so glad that your fall didn't cause any problems. Its strange that your legs are suddenly weaker, did the doctors have an explanation?
Is your vena cava filter permanent? Its a pain in the but (err groin actually) to get one, but it does make you feel more confident for surgery I think. Mine is permanent, which I'm not crazy about since I'm not quite 30 so it might be in me for quite a while. I try to think of it as protective, but it freaks me out a little to have it in there. Its going to rust away or something.
Jennifer,
I am surprised that your filter is permanent.. I was told that I would only have to keep it forever if I did have a clot..which fortunaltly I didn't, so it was removed a week after my bypass.
The doctor showed me the filter after removing it, and man it was huge...I couldn't believe that it fit inside my vein..
Can you notice it???

My particular cardiologist doesn't like to use the retrievable filters if he can avoid it. He said that too often he finds them to be troublesome and dangerous to retrieve, and since I have a family history of strokes, it wouldn't be a bad idea to have one permanently anyway. I was amenable mainly because I didn't have a surgery date yet and with the retrievable ones you have to do it within a certain time frame. In a way its good, because I ended up crashing in recovery after the IVC (and heart cath) - my heart almost stopped and I was there for many extra hours before I could leave because my blood pressure and pulse kept dropping. I'm glad I didn't have to go back and repeat the whole thing a few weeks later.
Oh, and no I don't feel it. As long as it stays where its supposed to and it doesn't rust or break off and kill me I guess its a good thing.
