Ketosis Flu?

I saw my surgeon on last Friday and he told me I'm having 'ketosis flu' - I have every symptom known to man (exhaustion, smell aversions, texture aversions, intestinal pain, nausea all the time, etc.) and extreme symptoms at that. I've been in bed since Friday, felt better on Sunday, was back in bed Sunday by noon.  The doc says most people have at least a mild form of this during their recovery, but I have a severe case. (I feel like crud!) Did you have this and was anything that made you feel better?  My doctor says it can last a week or two, sometimes up to three months. I also have reverse dehydration.  I'm getting 60+ oz of fluid in a day, but my sodium and potassium levels are depleted.  So all the fluid doesn't really have anything to do and because of the sodium levels, my body may be hanging on to lots of water.  For this I'm to drink 6oz. of tomato juice every day to help the sodium and potassium levels and hopefully get the excess water out of my system.  Oh joy...... HELP! Thanks, Jana

I felt like complete crap while I was in heavy ketosis early out from surgery.  I could smell everything even more than usual (and ask anyone who knows me, I already have a freakish sense of smell).  Any strong smell made me suck, I was completely exhausted, nauseas, couldn't eat.  I didn't have intestinal pain (well, I did, but it was a complication).  I was very easily dehydrated, cranky and headachey because of it.  I have never heard it called "ketosis flu" but it is absolutely a fact that it can make you feel rotten (and smell rotten too!)

Oh, and the second part of your post - what makes you feel better?  I was low in potassium and magnesium also, so I drank smar****er and pedialyte to try to get my electrolytes back up.  It helped, as did waiting a while after I woke up before I showered.  I always felt sickest in the shower.  Hot tea helped, it was soothing to me, smelled nice, especially peppermint, and felt good inside.  Other than that, lots of fluids, rest, and time.  As you started eating a little more and in more variety, you'll probably come out of ketosis.  You don't have to be in ketosis to burn fat, so I prefer to keep my carbs moderate instead of super-low, which induces ketosis.
