Silly Question I know  but   did you have a distal , proximinal, medial  ryny, lap band ,  or Ds ? & why ?   how do you feel you have done ?  The reason I ask is just to get an idea of what  procedure is been most effective for people with BMI's  over 50  I am currently  looking at a revision  and just curious to hear feedback ...  Thanks Gina

Hello, I had lap RNY back in August.  He bypassed 150cm of intestines, so I guess it was a long proximal RNY.  I chose it for a couple of reasons, although I seriously considered DS. 1. No lap DS surgeon in the near area, and didn't want an open surgery after seeing what a friend of mine went through with wound infection 2.  Long waiting list for DS where I was looking - it had already taken me years to decide to have surgery - once I decided I wanted it done asap 3.  Wanted to change my eating habits - I wanted to learn to eat healthy and I thought RNY was a better choice in that arena 4.  I wanted malabsorption  but I was scared of malnutrition, so RNY seemed like a better choice 5.  There was an experienced surgical group in town with a surgeon who was willing to try lap even though I was so heavy (he did make me lose 40lbs first, but a lot of surgeons wouldn't have done it at all) 6.  Insurance covered RNY easily but wasn't sure about DS Best of luck! I had the RNY laprascopically  about 9 weeks ago. I did very well except for a minor incision infection.  I am on a semi pureed diet (solids cut in tiny pieces) and doing well with weight loss and stomach issues.  I am vigilant about getting in my daily water & vitamins, plus some exercise.  I can't compare because I haven't had other surgeries, but this is my feedback.  I have a daughter who had the RNY done 2 years ago this coming Wed. She was 315 lbs and is now 127 lbs. She did well also except for anemia issues which are her own fault for skipping vitamins & iron supplements.  Good luck and keep us updated on your decision and outcome.  Jeanine

Hi Gina, I had open RNY on Oct 2, 2006. I was not a candidate for lap because of my weight. I started out at 492 lbs. I am now down to 242 lbs. I did well with the surgery, in fact, have not had to take my blood pressure meds since the day of surgery. I would do it again in a heartbeat if I had to, however, I know I won't have to! lol  Take care and know there is no such thing as a silly question, we are always here to help! Hugs Theresa

Hey Gina: You have come to the right board, the members here have done extrordinarily (sp?) well.  You will see weight losses of up to 300 lbs. here.   Jenn really gave you some terrific answers.  She has really done her homework and is a great source of information.  There are several other people here that also can be very helpful. I personally had a BMI of 69 weighing in around 456 pre surgery and have been as high as 500 at one time.  I chose my surgeon based on the hospital that I wanted to have the surgery at.  Living in Philly there are many great hospitals as well as a Barix Center.  I am 52 years old and with the exception of lymphedma and bone on bone knees I was healthy.  I went to Pennsylvania Hospital because I fully trusted it and also I was born there and wanted my re-birth to be there also.   I had open (started out lap and surgeon had to convert at last minute) RNY.  I believe I had what would be considered medial.  At the time I had the surgery RNY was the only option at this hospital, and I wanted to get started.  I might have considered DS but it wasn't the option at the time. I am 19 months post-op and 200 lbs. less.  I am having my second panni and hernia repair on Thursday.  I still have 100 lbs to go but because of needing knees and having lymphedma a panni is the first step. I wish you luck, again welcome to you. Jeanne

Hi Gina! I know I haven't been to support meetings in awhile..but I thought you looked super the last time I saw you!  Can I ask..why you need a revision??? Also, were you able to have plastics done yet?  I remember you mentioning your interest in it before.   I had open ryn..but did not have a choice in the matter.  They started out doing lap and turned open when my hernia was strangulating and causing drama.  I think my insurance at the time would only cover ryn. Take care! Ginger
