New Year's Resolutions, anyone?

Ongoing goals are a good thing!  I use New Year's and my birthday as touchpoints to review my goals and decide if I need to make adjustments -  How far are you on your dissertation and what is your degree in?  A friend of mine is working on his dissertation and he hopes to defend it in late 2008 or early 2009.  It's amazing to hear him talk about the process, which is something I'd never do at this point.  When I finished law school and sat for the bar, I swore off school forever (or at least until I was independently wealthy and could learn just for learning's sake!).   I encourage you to work on #4 and #5; doing new things helps keep life interesting!!! I am in my 4th year (so three and a half years along).  I am planning to graduate May of 2009 (and unfortunately not earlier like I'd hoped - the last 5 months since surgery have been a real bust in the research department).  My degree will be in bioinformatics, aka computational biology.  Its basically all computer-based research and modeling.  A lot of involves the genomic information that is constantly being released about organisms.  I work on the microbe side of things, as my masters was in microbiology.  Its all interesting and challenging, but I do have some regrets about not going to medical school instead.  The deciding factor against med school was my weight *sigh* and now I'm so sick of school I don't think I have it in me.  Plus I want to have kids and med school would make that part of my life all the more challenging.  No more school, I am ready to graduate and do something away from a university for a few years before I decide if I want to be a professor.

People like me are amazed by people like you!!!    I'm analytical, but in a really different way than you must be.   If you want to go to med school at some point, you'll do it -  Kellie

Dunny, did you ever read, "The World According to Garp"?  One of my favorite lines from the book is, when Garp's son asks Garp what "gradual school" (graduate school) is, Garp replies, "Gradual school is when you gradually decide you don't want to go to school any more." Describes me to a T.  I had planned to take a certificate program in Emergency Management as an adjunct to my public health training, but I don't feel like going to school right now.  Being on the sever year plan just to finish my masters wore me to the bone. Maybe I'll be one of those 90 years olds they show on TV occasionally who go back to school to finish their education.  My goal was a masters, and I have it.  A PhD would be nice, but I don't plan to teach, so I'm not very motivated to get one. Um, that should be "seven year plan," although I certainly wanted to sever something during those long, long years slogging away at my MS degree. Kix (making a note to call the eye doctor for an exam)

I never read it, but its sooo true!  I want to sever things now and again too.  Our computer server in the lab could use a nice chainsaw down the middle I think ;-)

Hiya, Marge!  Glad you popped in to post your thoughts on New Year's goals.  Glad to see you've got some "takin' care of Marge" things on the list; it's important to do that!   Dancing is great exercise!  One of my workout buddies takes dancing classes and she loves it.  She been going to something called Zumba and just loves it.  It's a cardio workout based on Latin dance moves with great music.  You can get more information at https://www.zumba.com/index.cfm; perhaps there are Zumba classes in your area that you can check out!   When you're finished painting your town red, want to bring your paintbrush to my neck of the woods???  I've got some rooms that need a serious paint job!!!
