liquid diet
sounds like you are on the right track, but be careful of the salt content in soups (do you mean broth?) they will make you retain water. A better suggestion would be the Medifast liquid diet...it works pretty fast and doesn't leave you hungry. You can get it online or from your doctor. Hope this helps. Jeanine

You should definitely keep your protein up even on liquids. Protein helps you heal and keeps your body from digesting your muscle for energy! There are lots of protein powders available that you can mix with nonfat milk or water or soy. If you buy the dry stuff I'd buy some samples and see if there are any you like before you invest in a bigger amount. There are also quite a few ready to drink protein shakes available - the supermarket, GNC, or vitamin shoppe are good places to look. I found Atkins Advantage shakes to be decent (vanilla and chocolate royale were the best). On a liquid diet I would drink at least two, probably 3 shakes a day to make sure you get that protein in.
I'd also take a multivitamin if you aren't already. May as well get in these habits now!
I had to lose weight prior to surgery, so my bariatric MD put me on a modified Optifast diet (around 1100 calories a day) so my metabolism wouldn't grind to a halt. With each shake containing 150 calories or so, I was practically "eating" every two hours and was never hungry.
As a post-op, I use the ready to drink EAS AdvantEDGE carb control ready to drink protein drink. It has 17 gms of protein and only 110 calories. They come in chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry (although I've only tried the chocolate) and it doesn't taste too bad. You can get them cheaply at Walmart. I like them for breakfast when I don't feel like eating a "heavy" protein breakfast.
I'm thinking if you used these in place of the soups, you'd get more nutrients and protein, and not so much salt. As a matter of fact, when I went off Optifast to go on a clear liquid three days before surgery, I gained seven pounds from all the sodium in the soup. I don't ever add salt to food, so I guess I'm really sensitive to it.
Check with your doctor about using the protein drinks in lieu of food. He may want to do blood work to make sure your eletrolytes don't go all wonky.
Good luck!
