Has anyone here gone to Mexico for surgery? If so, will you tell me how it went? etc.

One of the things I would be cautious about in considering going to Mexico for your surgery is that there is not a program that supports you before and after the surgery.  My surgery is going to be at St. Vincent's in Carmel, Indiana and they have a lifelong after-care program with free dietician appointments, support groups, exercise groups and food preparing groups.  I think before and aftercare is an important part of being successful longterm in this surgery.

Hi. I cross posted this onto the DS board because many of the members have had surgery in Mexico. I think you will get some great information shortly. Jo

Hey Lisa, Nope - I didn't have my surgery in Mexico - but I know a whole bunch of folks who did.  Which surgeon are you considering? I did, however, have my DS in Spain, with the amazing Dr. Aniceto Baltasar.  The entire experience - keeping in mind I'm just shy of being 5 and a half years post-op - has been nothing but phenomenal.  What a blessing! My starting BMI was 64.  I've lost over 200 pounds.  I've lost a boatload of co-morbidities, a wheelchair, and incredible levels of chronic pain. I love my DS!  If there are any questions I can answer - please feel free to PM or email me.  Or if you'd rather chat here, that's okay, too! Blessings, dina

Hi Lisa - I had my surgery in Brazil with Dr Marchesini.  I think the hardest thing was accepting that I COULD get good medical care out of country.  And I did!  My whole experience was fabulous.  Many others can share their experience with you about Mexico, but I would advise to find someone who is very experienced with American patients and has the support system already in place to take care of ALL your needs. Dr Marchesini had a private nurse who spoke English for all his N. American patients -- he acted as liasion at the hospital and visited daily while we were recuperating at the hotel.  There is a taxi driver who was schooled in America and loves Dr M's patients and she is always recommended to post-ops for pleasure/business trips and even plans out some wonderful day-long tourist excursions.  There were many other benefits of using a surgeon who deals with lots of American patients. So, no, I didn't go to Mexico, but understand the fears, concerns and trepidation surrounding making this kind of decision.  Are you considering Dr Ungson?  I have read lots and lots of good things about him.  You can also get some good information at www.duodenalswitch.com Good luck.
