Can anyone recommend a good book for looking up the nutritional values of common foods. I am mostly interested in the basics, calories, protein, fat, sodium. If I had a fantasy come true, one that I could carry with me that also had major restaurants in it would be fantastic. Thanks, Julie

There are a lot of good databases available, but I'm not sure about good current books.  I've seen a few pocket guides here and there.  One good downloadable database is free (I think) from calorieking.com

http://www.calorieking.com/shop/item.php?product_id=11 That is their pocket guide, and for $8 that's not too bad.  Is that the kind of thing you had in mind?

It doesn't all show on my window, I don't know about yours, so I'm splitting the address in to two lines http://www.calorieking.com/ shop/item.php?product_id=11

Calorieking.com's database is great - has lots of restaurant information in it.  I also use their diet diary for my Palm Pilot to keep track of my daily food intake, exercise, and weight.  It's been a blessing for me as I've gotten further out - it helps me maintain the intellectual relationship between what I eat and how much I weigh.  Anyway, their food database is outstanding.  If you have a PDA, I would highly recommend the diet diary as well - it costs $20-30 and is worth every penny.   Good luck finding a tool that works for you! Thanks, Jenn and Kelli. I guess CalorieKing is the way to go. I will have to figure out if getting a PDA makes sense. I am afraid of letting go of the vigilance I now have at home, which is why I thought a book may help, but a PDA would keep me from having to re-enter everything once I get home. Hhmmm............. -Julie

You can also just use their website instead of a PDA - and log it at your computer.
