Recent Oprah show abt large weight losses

This has been on my mind and in order to get it off I need to spill it to you who will understand what I mean. Sometime in the last couple weeks Oprah ran a show about people who had lost a really large amount of weight "on their own", as she said, "without surgery". Yeah, good for them. I have three issues about this show. 1) Why didn't they ever, not for one of these people, mention when how long ago they hit  their goal and how long they have kept the weight off? 2) Has she ever done a show about the positive side of WLS? She may have, but I don't know. 3) One woman on the show mentioned that before she began her weight loss program, she once ordered a three-tier wedding cake just for herself, and spent two days just eating it. As someone for whom cake was my weapon of choice, I can't stop thinking, "damn, why didn't I ever think of that???" -Julie
Practice safe eating - always use condiments.

LOL @ the wedding cake idea.  Its a good think you DIDN'T think of that!  I don'****ch Oprah, but I do know she has done at least one show about WLS.  It was on that show that the whole low alcohol tolerance thing sort of came to light, and also the stuff about transfer addiction was a focus.  I'm not sure if she is pro-WLS but I do sort of have a problem with the recent show where she called them "heroes" because they did it without surgical intervention.  You shouldn't feel like less of a person because you decided you need surgical intervention.  At least you decided to take control of your life in some manner!

Funny you mention this, Julie.  When I went to Oakland for my friend's retirement party, I ran into one of the secretaries who works in MCH.  She lost some weight, so we talked about weight loss.  She asked me, "Did you lose it the right way?"  Pompous sow.  I replied, "Yes, I did.  I had weight loss surgery."  I don'****ch Oprah, I don't like Oprah, I don't understand why Oprah is popular.  She and Dr. Phil can both kiss the fattest part of my azz, which isn't all that fat anymore, thanks to WLS!  I am also a cakeoholic, and wedding cake isn't tasty enough to have made me want to eat a whole one prior to WLS.  However, if you said "Costco cake," I'd reply, bring it on!  Even now, I walk by the cake rack at Costco and make the same noises Homer Simpson makes when he thinks of donuts. I have no patience for people who diss WLS.  To those who diss WLS, I want to tell them: you lost weight the "right" way?  Good for you, but don't act like you're getting to a higher level of heaven than me just because you dieted to lose weight.  WLS saved my life, and for that, I am forever grateful.  Come see me in a year, or two, or five, and let's see if you kept the weight off doing it the "right" way. I like the wedding cake idea too. Oh well. I think American's are so thrilled with the idea of losing weight it makes for good ratings when she has a show like that. And most people want an easy fix. This plays to a certain audience. We know the truth, it is hard work. Don't let it bug you.

As a cake lover, I couldn't believed I had never done that! Or even bought a store cake and eaten the whole thing - I guess I drew the line somewhere ...lol! I'd bake one and eat it instead! I really didn't let it bother me how Oprah acted or what she said , I was just so darn proud of these people loosing all that weight!

I totally understand what you are saying. I have heard WLS termed "the easy way out"...I wanna scream when I hear that. There's nothing easy about losing and regaining (plus more each time) the same damn weight multiple times over the years. I have battled it for 40 years.  6 weeks of Medifast was NOT easy. Major surgery was NOT easy. Clear liquids for days on end was NOT easy. Even now, taking 30 min to eat a tiny meal is anything BUT easy!  If you ask me, eatting whatever you want and losing still is easier....but like you all point out...NOW lets see how long you keep it off!????   Take a good look at Oprah...she can afford the best of foods and a staff to prepare it for her and she goes up & down still....right now she looks UP to me!  ANyone else notice it?  If anyone makes a statement to me about my WLS being "the easy way out"..my come back will be, No....I risked my life to SAVE my life and there was nothing easy about that!    Jeanine
