I had the DS. The first 3 months are very similar to the RNY in terms of restriction (although most DSers don't have to do a liquid diet...just a soft diet for a couple of weeks), but  by 3 or 4 weeks out I was eating regular food...although less of it.  If you read though my profile, I've copied some of the What did you eat today threads into my profile so that people can see what I was eating at various stages.  In general, the first 3 months I ate pretty low carb.   There just wasn't enough room for carbs and protein....alhtough I indulged regularly (3 or 4 times a week ..or more in desserts).  At about 6 months out, I started to add more carbs to my diet, and by 1 year out...you'd probably not know I was a WLS patient.  Some days, I eat over 5000 calories...the last time I tracked fitday it was over 6000, but I ate a lot of fat that day.  Right now I'm just trying to find the balance to maintain.....at 6'1'' 200 lbs, I'm in a medium shirt and a 36 pants, preplastics.....I'm good.   Although, since my weight loss hasn't stopped yet, I'll probably end up at about 190 preplastics.  Here's a typical day for me in terms of eating: Breakfast:  1- 1 1/2  cups of cottage cheese topped with 1 cup of cinnamon toast crunch Snack:  banana, soy chips, a few slices of cheese Lunch:  6 to 8 oz of grilled chicken on top of a large salad with extra ranch dressing, croutons and bacon, with a diet coke Snack:  another cup of cottage cheese, 1 granola bar, a few cookies,  a couple of cheese sticks Dinner:  2 hamburgers, a large salad, thousand island dressing  Dessert:  ice cream sandwich (regular..the sugar free stuff makes me gassy) Snack:  10 ritz crackers with cheese and pepperoni slices,  a taco Late night snack:  another burger and salad. Wow that's a lot of food and losing... hey that is great! Not something I can do ... I still have to eat small portions compared to what I ate at once but more often..and will gain... congrats!
