Hi Everyone, I'm just figuring this board out. I filled everything out before my surgery April 11th 2007. Now I'm getting around to posting. My weight pre op was 533 lbs As of last week I'm now 433 lbs. It''s amazing to me. I know the scale says that much and I'm getting around much better. But I still keeping looking in the mirror and I don't see the loss. Maybe it's because I'm so big it will take allot more weight gone before I notice the physical change. I guess my question is any women out there over 500lbs that has had this surgery? And if so please let me know how and what you have went threw after wards.

I wasn't over 500 but I was on my way at 445 and at 5'1" I'd imagine that put my BMI up near yours where you started.  On the day of surgery I was 402, but its only been a week so I can't say if I can tell a change.  The 40 lbs I lost before surgery don't really show, except maybe in my face.  There is also body dismorphism to consider - and you see yourself every day so its hard to see any changes.  I looked at your pictures and I could see that your arms were a little smaller at two months out for sure.   There are several people I've read on here that were over 500 but many of them were under by their surgery date.  Congratulations on your weight loss!  You are doing amazing.  All the best,  Jenn

greetings congrats on your success so far! way to go! i was 463 on day of surgery...and am currently sitting at 185. i wasn't one to keep a chart of how much i'd lost at intervals along the way, but i do recall that it was a long time before i could see the change in the mirror. even now, i don't think i really can tell what i look like...could be the yards of excess skin hanging all over me that's throwing my perception off, though!

things have gone really, really well for me. no problems...and i feel wonderful!

best of luck to you!

Good Monday Morning to you: First of all congratulations on your weight loss.  That is amazing.  I started out at 456 lbs. when I looked into WLS.  I had been as high as 490+ when I decided to have a panni thinking that would be the answer .  It wasn't but I did manage to keep 50 of the pounds off.  I had my surgery in June 2006 and to date I have lost 160 lbs.  I am on a 4 month stall in which I need to seriously look at what I am eating and shake things up.  I have lymphdema in one leg and also severe osto artho in both knees.  In about 50 lbs. from now I can get new knees.

I had open RNY, surgeon had to go open at the very last minute so I have the scars for an open incision and also the lap.  I had no problems post surgery, I was up and around within hours of the surgery and went home 2 days after.  I had to have a Vena Cava filter installed prior to the surgery for the prevention of blood clots.

As far as the diet afterwards I followed the nuts menu almost to the t.  If I had followed it exactly, I would have been up 24 hours a day, lol.  I lost 86 lbs in two months and then stalled for a month.  I am 13 months post op and weigh in at 295.  I still have another 120 to go but I am not in a race to get there.  I have learned a tremendous amount about myself over these 13 months and continue to learn everyday.  I go for my 1 year post-op this month and I am going to talk about what surgerical, if any, options I have for this last 120.

Good luck to you.  You are off to a great start.  Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or just want to talk.

Congrats on your 100 pound loss - way to go!  I was 396 before surgery, but it took a long time before I could see a difference in my body.  I can't give an exact time frame, but I think I had lost about 100 pounds before I could even begin to see a difference.  I really began to see the change when I'd lost about 150 pounds.  Just keeping focusing on the lower numbers on the scale and how much better you are getting around.  It takes our brains a while to catch up with our bodies, plus it's harder to see the change when you look at yourself every day.  I think that's why so many folks take pictures at regular intervals so they can see the difference in their photos.   Good luck on your continuing journey -  Kellie

I was about 500 at one time, but at the time of surgery I weighed 425.  I went on a crash diet to shrink my liver preop. I now weigh 163 pounds and I would like to loose about 20 more pounds. My doctor says stay where I am because he will remove about 20 pounds of skin/fat during my lower body lift. I am not the normal case however, my doctor bypassed my intestine a bit shorter than normal (at my request after promising like nuts to take my vitamins religiously)  My bloodwork is above normal and I am very healthy. I've had my first plastic surgery a month ago on my arms. I am beyond happy with this new life. When I lost the first 100 I also could not see it.  There is a pic of me on my profile after 100 pound loss and I didn't see the loss. Now, I do. I had about 275 pounds to loose, those of us that are Super super morbidly obese have special issues. Sounds like you are doing just fine. Donna

My highest recorded weight was 413, but I can identify with what you are saying.  I have lost 173 pounds, but still see the bigger me in the mirror no matter what everyone else says.  I guess even after almost 2 years that it will be a matter of time before I see the real me.  The only thing I noticed was one day in the mirror I realized that my "bubble butt" was almost gone and my rear end was fairly flat.  You have done so well so far.  Enjoy the ride. Hugs, Janie

Welcome!! I was 470 and I know what you are saying. But you will start noticing it all at once. This surgery has been a MIRACLE to me health wise mostly. I am no longer taking all my med;s and so much healthier. I use to have to use a wheel chair and now can walk most places !!! Enjoy your journey
