Hi there, I was wondering what everyone's views are about drinking anything with carbonation. I am 19 months out, still wanna lose 25 more pounds. I have stayed away from it really well until lately. It does make my pouch feel funny so I can't drink alot. But it taste so damn good. I know its wrong. I have only had a couple sodas. Just curious if anyone else has gone thru this. What does your surgeon say? I have heard mixed things about it. I am back to water and plan to stay that way, just wondering if I have messed up my pouch. Thanks alot, Lynn

I have an occasional diet soda, but it makes me belch a lot so I don't do it often!  I doubt it's stretching my pouch because I drink it so rarely, and when I do I have one, I drink it over the course of an hour or so.  I'm very careful not to let soda become a habit - it would interfere with getting in water and other "good" fluids, so I try to make this a rare treat.   I haven't checked with my surgeon, although soda was a no-no right after surgery. At 22 months out, I think he would be okay with an occasional SF soda... Kellie

I hear mixed views on drinking soda regarding the pouch, but everything I hear about anybody--non wls people--is negative.  There is nothing to benefit anyone from drinking even diet sodas.  They increase your appetite for sugar and, the recent study, even links them to heart disease issues.   I know plain water can be boring, but there are the sugar free flavorings that help.  I doubt that you've messed up your pouch with just a couple of sodas this far out.   Good luck with your last 25 pounds. Here's what I just posted on this subject on the main board, but I need to add that I didn't even attempt a soda of any kind until my doctor cleared me to use them at my 6 month check-up..... I'm not touching the debate, but I have to tell ya'll something..... LOL I really love and miss my diet pepsi and do upon ocassion give into one.... although the pressure from the carbonation does cause some discomfort... something I've found that helps tremendously is reverting back to my youth.... LOL  when I was a kid we used to put a bag of peanuts in our Dr. Pepper... weird I know but tasty.... well I've discovered during a bout of nostalgia that the salt in the peanuts seems to break up the carbonation, so now when I have a diet pepsi it's with a bag of peanuts in it, no discomfort and extra protein to boot!  LOL

Thanks for the replys... I feel alittle better about what I had done.  The peanuts in the soda sounds very interesting... Next time I go see my surgeon I will ask her opinion on soda. I was told none in the beginning. but not sure about long term. Thanks again, Lynn

I am almost 11 months out. I never drank much soda but sure want one from time to time. I was told it would stretch my pouch. So I think I do not want to go thru all the surgery and "ruin" it for a soda that is not good for me anyway. So I sigh and say oh well....

Everyone is different and there are conflicting sides to this, but I personally haven't touched carbonation in over 3 years.  I don't really miss it because regular soda is full of sugar and the diet stuff is just a bunch of chemicals.  I stick to decaf tea, light juices using splenda, and regular Kool-Aid made with splenda.   It is your personal choice, but for me the stuff helped me get to over 400 pounds and it is just not worth the risk.   Hugs, Janie
