I have been looking in on this board for a while. I am at the end of month of 4 of 6 on the doctor diet. I have a BMI of 57.8. Did any of you have to have the supervised diet? If not any advise to fight it?

Is this an insurance or a surgeon requirement?  In the case of insurance, you may not be able to fight it.  It is pretty standard to have to show previous weight-loss efforts.  I didn't have the documentation, so I wrote a letter explaining why and listed the diets and weight-loss programs I had tried without medical supervision.   If it is a surgeon's requirement, I'd change surgeons.  If you read the research on thr RNY, the procedure is clearly about more than just being able to diet.  Obesity is a disease--not just a behavioral issue--and if your surgeon doesn't understand that then why is he/she doing bariatric surgery?  Diets as a treatment for obesity fail 95% of the time.  Who would go to a doctor who prescribes medicine that didn't work?  If you do have to do the six month diet, which you are almost done with, make good use of the time to work on portion control, changing your food personality, and learning how to eat healthy.  All of these will help you post-surgery. Good luck, Sally 398/162/170

yes I myself am on  two months into a 6 month supervised diet which is a requirement of my insurance which is an HMO. Which according to the news is going to be the norm soon with HMO's of course I still beilieve that will depend on the carrier. Of course my doctor said that he says six months but compliance is also one of the issues. They like to see you lose some weight yourself for two reason 1.One to make sure that you can be compliant to a way of eating that will keep you in good health . do to malabsoption you have to get enought protein and such 2. a little weight lose before surgery comes from fat around the organs and reduces the size of the liver this all makes for a less complicated surgery and less risk to patient. I know it stinks you are two months ahead of me. and sometimes the wait drives me crazy. and all my friends had PPO's and had all their tests and and surgery within 2-3 months. But I am trying to make use of my time and feel like I am preparing for what will come after the surgery. Good luck to you

HI, Congrats on reaching your 4th month! Your almost done...the end is near. I will have my 3moths NUT apt in a couple weeks ...so im on my 3rd month. I understand your plights...im going through the same thing. i wish someone could make the time go faster. it seems like this has been the slowest 6months filled with alot of obstacles.  Although ive been going through alot lately i belive whatever dosnt kill you makes you stronger. I want to encourage you to hang in there. Your almost finished and will soon be on the loosing side.   Re: fighting the diet...i also wanted to fight it but quickly found out the best is just to finish the diet. i could have fought it but the chances of denial was close to 100% beacuse thats one of my insurance (capital blue cross ppo) requirement. they want to see 6months physican supervised diet and medical neccesity. After reserching i decided this was a battle that i really didnt need to fight...i will finish their stupid pre -op diet plan and hopefully get aproved !  They will have a WAR if i dont get aproved...lol.  Anyway i just wanted to write and let you know i understand, but you have to pick and choose and this may be one of those things you shouldnt bother fighting. Congrats again on your 4th month and good luck with the rest of your process!

I am currently starting my 3rd month of the 6 month supervised diet for my insurance.  I'm not appealing it because it gives me more time to work on myself prior to surgery.  My surgeon and shrink says that people that are required to do the supervised diet tend to do much better (this is his observation - not a hard fact) Some days it seems like a waste and time is going so slow.  So I understand and I'm here with you!
