Going Back to Work After Six Years?

I haven't worked in six years (I'm on disability), and I'm thinking about trying to go look for a good job now that I'm beginning to have a more normal life. My dilemma?  All my supervisors at my previous jobs have retired.  I have also moved to CO since I left work and don't really have anyone here who can vouch for me in terms of being a capable employee. I haven't kept in close touch with many of the folks I used to work with'; however, I think if they were contacted, they would say good things about me.  Would it be tacky to email them and ask if they would feel comfortable giving me a reference? Oy!  Just when I think going back into the real world is seamless, these little bumps in the road continue to appear. Kix

Kix,

Absolutely contact the people you worked with.  Even the retired supervisors!  It all helps!

Good luck!

You get to it Kix, I think you will be amazed at how good you will feel about yourself. Do not question weather you should contact people you worked with in the past. As my mother says it is all in who you have known and who you know. It is time to take your life back and belive in you. Let us know. I go meet with the surgeon on Monday so I will be getting a date then. I am trying to be calm and get the house in order again. I even had a dream the other night that I was offered a job at my local grocery to help people at the self check out. In the dream I was thrilled to death LOL. I do hope to maybe look into a pharmacy tech job in my future.                                                              Annie

It is never too late to be what you might have been.?

How exciting!  You can probably find one old co-worker or supervisor that could still give a good word for you.  Just think of how things have changed for you in the past year!  WOW Kix

That's completely awesome!  I wouldn't hesitate to contact anyone in your past and ask for a reference.  You can always say that you haven't worked in 6 years due to disability and I'm sure they, and possible employers, will keep that in mind.  Best of luck!

Hi Kix, I get contacted by people I worked with from as long ago as 8 -10 years to give a reference. Don't let that hold you back. You are doing awsome. Jo

How fun!!!  I'm sure they would LOVE to hear from you and see what you've been up to.  Remember with each hurdle you jump over you feel better and better, stronger and stronger.  YOU can do it!!!
