I am so bummed.. I have to fly next month for a friends wedding that I have to be in yuck..   So I have to buy a ticket.. I am going to be a person of size.  I will be taking my 9 month old daughter.. Do I just buy two tickets and save the embarrasing moment of not fitting next to someone?  I flew about 6 years ago.. smaller then and need a seat belt expander.. I am just so anxious over this... I can't wait until the weight is gone and I wont need to think about this stuff.. ughhh.. thanks Amy

Save yourself any possible embarrassment by buying two seats.  That way, you can relax and know the airline won't hassle you about taking up too much space.  Pre-board, and ask the flight attendant for a seat belt extender when you board.  That way, you will be settled in before everyone else shoves their way onto the plane! Have a good trip! Kix

I am flying to Vegas at the end of the month for a confererence, and I bought two tickets.  It sucked because the school pays for the trip, but they will only pay for one ticket, so the rest is out of pocket.  The joys of being fat.  If your daughter doesn't take up much space maybe you can flow over in to her seat?  Otherwise, I'd buy two tickets, and soon, so the price doesn't increase (I waited and had to pay double!)  Also you can ask for the seatbelt extender, or buy your own for about $50.  I am buying one to save on the embarrassment, and I'll just auction on ebay or something later after I lose enough weight.  Its unfortunate that we have to do these things, but I'd rather not be hassled in public personally.  Best of luck deciding and I hope you enjoy your trip otherwise! I also have flown with a double ticket.  I called the airlines and told them that I was a COS and that I needed an extra space.  The lady on the airlines that I flew said that if the plane was not completely booked or full, that I could get the second ticket refunded.  That is what happened to at least part of my trip.  They were very nice and helpful, but I try to not have to fly anywhere if I can get by with driving.  Good luck.

Amy I feel for you. In May I had to fly on 6 different airplanes in one week. And 4 of them were those kind that just have 2 seats on either side. What I did was kept checking on line where my seat was. I kept moving it around so that it was always next to an empty seat. It worked on 5 of the 6 flights. The 6th one was completly filled. It was okay but not really comfortable. Good luck and know that this will soon be over with our losing weight. HUGS. Jo

Amy, I bought 2 seats both personally and for my work trips for 15 long years.  It really makes it better.  I hate it that the airlines will not give you frequent flier miles on both seats though, even though you pay the same price for both seats. You will love it when you first get on a plane again and wallah, you fit! We feel your pain! Lori

Amy you have the right idea on buying two tickets.  Airlines try to fly sold out flights nowadays, so to see if you can have an extra seat might not be possible.  Plus, with getting a second ticket it will give you and your daughter room to relax.  To me it seems those seats keep getting smaller and smaller.  Ok, I know it's me getting bigger.  Years ago and at 320 lbs I would only get one seat, however, my sister and I traveled together.  Great thing with that is we just lifted the armrest and "shared" the fat...she's overweight too.  When I went alone I was always worried the airline would make me pay for an extra seat.  If that were to happen it would more than likely cost an arm and a leg and I definitely didn't have those to give.  Unfortunately for me, I made the decision 2 years ago to stop flying until the weight was under better control.  I ballooned up to my highest of 376, which finally got my attention.   Anyway, here's hoping we both can see an end and next time we buy an airline ticket it will just be for one.

a couple of ideas - when you check in - see if you can upgrade to business or first class.  The seats are larger and much more comfortable....  and an upgrade often costs less than 2 seats in coach... Also, research the plane on the airline site.  There is a one hour commuter flight that I have to take a couple of times a month.  There are 3 different aircrafts that fly that route on the airline I like to use....  one has a coach seat width of 17, one is 18 and the other is 22...  if I have to fly one of the first 2 I purchase a first class ticket and get a 25 inch seat... if I have to use the one that is 22 I manage ok and the seatbelt fits without an extender..... Once I booked on the 22 inch seat - they switched planes for mechanical purpouses.  I complained to staff that I had chosen the flight specifically for seat size and they upgraded me for free!
