hi, I have not had gastric bypass yet, but am curious about the gall bladder surgery.  I have been having pain in my upper right quadrant area, radiating to my back.  It comes and goes, but I'm guessing its my gall bladder. I weigh over 440 lbs. Have any of you of this size had the gb removed prior to weight loss surgery? What could I expect? Thanks!

Sounds like the pain I was having but mine wasn't removed until 4 months after WLS and I had lost 100 pounds, So I was down to 274 at the time of surgery. They told me the day of WLS that it needed to come out but they wouldn't do them at the same time. Every DR is different. My gallbladder surgery was done Lap, and it was nothing - I was in the hospital at 6:00AM ( after an hour drive) and then home by 2:30PM.  I was off two weeks, but didn't need it and played most of the second week. Best wishes to you!

I had gall bladder surgery in 1999, at about 350lbs.  I haven't had WLS yet.  Your pain sounds like gall bladder, but you should definitely check with a doc.  I let mine go long enough that it turned in to pancreatitis.  I was really sick though, for about 4 months with 1-2 week bouts of nausea and vomiting along with pain, followed by a week of just pain.  My little brother also just had his out (13), he had constant nagging pain in the same area as you but never got as sick as I did - it actually took a year to diagnose because the first round of tests didn't show anything, so they ran every other stomach oriented test available before going back to look at the gb six months later - when the tests showed it needed to come out.  Poor kid.  Be careful, talk to a doc, because symptoms of heart problems can also sometimes manifest as that type of pain.  But if its gb, you'll feel a million times better after its gone!  Depending on your weight and abdominal thickness they most often do it laparoscopically, but now and again still do it open.  I stayed in the hospital for 1 night, my brother and a friend of mine who had it done recently both left the same day.  If everything goes well you'll be sore for a little while, and some foods won't agree with you (in my case mainly fried things, which isn't a bad thing!)  Oh, and I know this is graphic, but when I'd have an attack coming on I'd pretty much always have oily yellow liquid BMs.  That is also a symptom that its not working right.  Best of luck, I hope you feel better soon! Thanks for all the replies.  I woke up today with my stomach hurting--feels like gas, though.  Hopefully I will make an appt. with my dr. if I can get up the nerve.  I HATE GOING TO DOCTORS!   Well, thanks again.
