SMO slow losers?
Hi all. My BMI at the time of surgery was about 75. I have about 250 excess pounds to lose, at least. Anyway, my family heard all the stories about SMO people just shedding weight after surgery. My doctor said he wouldn't be surprised if I lost 40 lbs in a month. But here I am, three months out and "only" down 59 lbs since surgery, 66 lbs overall.
On one hand, I'm not too worried about it because of reasons such as not having to buy clothes as often, skin catching up a little better, etc. On the other hand, I've been SMO most of my life, probably since 4th grade. In the back of my mind I'm scared to death I'll never lose this weight.
I feel like when I go back to the doctor, he's going to accuse me of deviating from the aftercare plan, even though I haven't. I'm terrified of complications, so I pretty much go by the book.
The real disappointment, however, is that my family is disappointed. They're very passive aggressive so they say things like, "Don't be too down about it, it'll pick up." when I'm not really down about it in the first place.
I guess I'm wondering if there are any other SMO slow losers here. My family is making me feel like I'm the only one.

My BMI was a bit over 66 at time of surgery. I don't know if I was a slow loser, but I did lose slower than the online chart. My doctor said about a pound to a pound and a half the first month, but I was slower than that. But since then I have been very steady--never had a stall or plateau. After the one year mark things did slow down a lot, but I still lose depending on how well I stay with the plan and exercise. I too was obese most of my life, so have had one plastic surgery and am looking into a tummy tuck.
The weight does come off but just differently with different people. Sometimes I think our expectations are our worst enemies!
Good luck,
Sally

Hi,
My name is Lorraine and I know how you feel in fact my sister is going through the same thing right now. I must say look at it a different way would you have lost that much on your own in 3 months? I lost around that same amount and now I am coming on my 11 month out an I have lost 148 pounds total. I still have another 100 pounds or so to lose but I am not worried about it will happen one day. I exercise 5 days per week for amount 1 hour and 20 min per day. I think I started exercising when I was about 2 months out and the weight loss really picked up and then it slowed down to 10 pounds per month and now I have only lost 13 pounds in the last 2 months which is 7 pounds off from were I was. My offical weigh in day is monday so time will tell. I said all that to let you know you are not alone and please dont compare yourself to anyone on this board you are unique all by yourself. This is your journey no one else but you and if you want to talk to someone about it come on this board and talk to us. I hope something I said is helpful.
Lorraine
You can make it.
I started out with a BMI of 64. I weighed 410 pounds. I lost 100 pounds in less than 5 months. Then, it slowed to a snail's pace. I've only lost 25 pounds in 3 1/2 months. It is dropping, but oh-so-very-slowly! I still want/need to lose another 75 to 100 pounds and wonder if it is even possible at this rate! I'm 7 1/2 mos post-op. I am fortunate that I don't get hungry (actually have to remember to eat most of the time). I get in 70 to 80 grams of protein most days and 60+ ounces of liquids with no trouble (working on almost 80 now for today). BUT, even though I get my protein, get my liquids, exercise, and I eat reasonably well making good choices, I don't see the weight melting away like it felt like it was to begin with! It is frustrating. BUT, this past weekend, I finally felt that my size 26 slacks were beginning to get a bit loose and I may be ready to start wearing some 24s. I knew I was losing inches as I've been measuring since Sept, but I hadn't really felt any change in 3 months!
I agree with what someone else already posted--quit telling family members what you weigh or what you've lost. I don't think your doc will be disappointed with approx 20 pounds per month! Mine certainly was not. AND, remember that old saying---slow and steady wins the race! As you already mentioned, it also gives your skin more time to rebound as you lose.
Chin up! You're doing great!
