You still have malabsorption working for you, so a lot of that wine that you're drinking is blowing right past any absorption.  Nevertheless, it  is adding extra carbs, which with a RNY, you don't need that right now.  This your peak time to lose the weight.  You've got an 18 to 24 month window, or "honeymoon" period.  After that, keeping the weight off will put you right back into restrictive dieting that you had to do without surgery to lose weight.  Unless you have a distal RNY or DS, unfortunately the weight will come back unless you continue/resume restrictive dieting after your weight loss window. Wine is full of carbs, and you don't need tthat now, or frurther down the road!

If you think you're starting the path to excessive drinking, then it is within your power to check it now, before it really does become a problem for you.

I too dealt with an increase desire for alcohol just a few months out from surgery. I thought it was strange but was really too embarrassed to talk about it for fear of being judged. I must say the desires have passed. I am 11 months out and I can barely drink a half of a glass of wine or any alcohol without it making me feel sick. I just don't even have the taste for it anymore. It's like my taste buds continue to change. I confided in my husband who has always been a great support and I continue to attend my bariatric support group which has been a great help.

I have been  2 years out from my gastric sleeve and I experienced this as well mainly because I just did not want to bother with eating. I did catch this early and I stopped buying wine to go to my house. I increased my protein and started working out more. I also had this discussion with other weight loss patients so I didn't feel like I was crazy..Pray and walk ...Your not alone with this issue but the first thing you have to do is stop buying the wine for a little bit. Now I can safely buy wine and it does not phase me it sits around for months now. So don't beat yourself up, and don't let it scare you tackle it head on.

This topic is so informative, I'm scheduled for VSG on 2/16/14, I'm not a big drinking at all,  I may have a drink once a month if that.. but I always have alcohol in my home so I'm glad to hear this is a possible issue. Thank you..

Hello Ms bygodsgrace, I read your post.  I have not had the surgery yet but I remember when I was start something new in my life like a diet  lol smile face. I would do  the program but then I would go around my friends and family and it was always when they was eating. Then I would find my self eating an extra meal alone. So I started to see a pattern so I avoid spending so much time with them. You can do it you don't want to create this type of habit that is unhealthy for you and your success. Try some positive things like walk before you go home to distress. Or turn some music on and dance before you eat. Try praying while you are in the car and breath.

You don't want to pick up weight from drink a glass here and there. You can do. Don't sabotage your future success

Just pick your self up and keep trying. Its by God grace that we are saved!

Thank you for the words of encouragement sis.

They shall run and not be weary,
They shall walk and not faint.

Stop with the alcohol. I have been struggling with alcohol for a few years now. Just like you I started with a glass after work then it progressed to 1 bottle of wine a night. I highly suggest that you quite the drinking before it gets out of control like it did for me.

how did you stop without having sideeffects the doctors say you should never stop on your own or you could have a seizure or die.

Hi... I wanted to let you ... First I'm not judging but I was dealing with alcoholism as well... I became very reckless and I had an everyday after work party at home or hanging out.  It became an issue to where my body was depleted of the vitamins and minerals my body needed. I started having seizures. On 12-6-2010 I finally surrendered and God took the taste and desire from me. By God's grace I will be 5 years sober this year. I got my gastric bypass back in 2006 and I would do it again minus the alcohol.  Just remember when you have an issue with a substance you have to give it up totally. It's a leaky faucet once it's fixed don't turn it on... best wishes to you.  God bless...
