13 Weeks out finding myself drinking wine everyday

Hello all it has been years since I have been on this forum.. I started out in 09 with a lap band, and I lost about 70 pounds and gained GERD and a bunch of other issues. On 8/4/14 I had a revision to RNY all is going great so far, but my only issue is that I have started drinking wine everyday like I am an old wino our something. And its like everyday when I get off and go home that is the first thing I want to do is have a glass of wine then cook dinner, then have some more wine until i go to bed.. Has anyone else had this issue? I am guessing that it is transfer of addictions, but this is one that is scaring the hell out of me.

 Shall renew their strength;
 They shall mount up with wings like eagles,
 They shall run and not be weary,
 They shall walk and not faint.

My doctor said we (WLS patients) are more  subsceptible to issues with alcohol after surgery.  I even recall Sharon Osbourne saying that after she had her lapband she found that drinking wine loosened things up and allowed her to eat more.

At least you have identified it could be a potential problem.  Good luck to you!!!

I also read that WLS patients have a higher risk of alcohol usage. I think it is a transfer of coping mechanisms. You can't eat your stress away so you drink it away. But you're adding calories that could slow down or reverse your process and you are complicating the magic your body is working. I sought out a counselor from my job's EAP program to help me talk through the things that frustrate/stress me. You might want to do the same so you can remain on track.

Listen, transfer addiction is real. I have so many that I have picked up all because I can't binge eat any longer. You should not be consuming wine at this early stage in the game so stop it. Try to find some other avenues that help you destress. If you hare married or in a relationship, HAVE SEX as much as possible, exercise, read, try on old clothes.....anything but a glass of vino. You will have more than enough time to enjoy those things. I will tell you that alchol will slow the weight loss process a little (so keep that in mind).

We are hear to support you my friend :-) Good luck!!

Just a few more steps to wonderland......and believe me I am taking baby steps (ugh).

Greetings I haven't been on in a while but I am glad I did at this point. I am going through the same thing. It's like I can't get home fast enough to get me a glass of wine. And like yourself, I do my chores and then drink myself to sleep. I guess it I because of the surgery but it doesn't take the entire bottle but I can put a nice dent in it. I did start with a rum and diet coke, but I found myself shopping online in my sleep and not remembering anything I bought. So now I settle for the wine. I too asked what is wrong with this picture.

I'm so glad you are going to get some help. Addiction is a horrible thing to battle.  I pray that with God's help you can kick the wine to the curb!

I can say for myself, obesity was part of my life, and lifestyle that caused by many things. The obesity is the symptom.  If you never asked the results of your psychological testing check it out.  I was surprised that I was diagnosed with ADD, and moderate depression.  I don't take medication at this point, but am entirely open to that.  It has helped me understand why, and how I respond to stressful stimuli.  I will stay in contact with clinical professionals in the meantime.  So, the tools we have WLS, but if I can say this on this forum....African American Women are taxed with a lot of responsibilities, that is multiplied if you are a wife, mother, and especially if you are a single parent.  It gets overwhelming, but in our strong proud selves we get going anyway instead of being patient, and understanding that we need help.  Achieving a balance.  Some things have to be let go off.  Priorities have to be checked!!! Sister, Mommy, Daughter, Wife......You have to come first! If your in a plane, and you don't put your mask on first you will not be conscious enough to help those around you! Put yourself first, decrease stress.  Sometimes I take 15 minutes to just soak in the bathtub, and drown out all the noise when I lean my hair, and head in the water to just hear myself breathe!!!! It's beautiful!!! Okay, that's enough.....Thanks for sharing, and allowing me to share!

God helps those who help themselves, amen!

Therapist, therapist, therapist! Mine is invaluable. Therapy will help you figure out why you feel you need to drink and give you strategies for dealing with those issues in a healthy way. You might benefit from an anti-anxiety medication since it sounds like your reason is stress. Just don't give up! (And not keeping wine in the house may help too). Before surgery I was a wine every day person, but now I drink other beverages from my beautiful wine glasses or I chew gum, both of which have helped break the habit.

Hello and first let me congratulate you on continuing on this journey.  I know a few people who started out with a Lap Band then went on to having RNY.

I'm not sure if you're aware of this, but drinking any form of alcohol is not good for you at this point.  When I had surgery 10 years ago my surgeon forbid his patients to drin any alcohol beverages for 1 year because it could damage your kidneys.  Please be careful...you don't want to end up with any issues as a result of drinking wine 3 months after having surgery.  I wish you the best on your journey.
