Does WLS impact African-Americans differently than other ethnic groups?

Yes we lose slower, not as much, and get less exercise.  But our bones stay healthier.

Thanks for the response.  Vogue I know of black girls  run.  They are Atl based but there is a Jacksonville FL chapter.  The article was more aboutrhe disparities between our ethnic group taking advantage of the tools available via WL

I don't know if we lose more slowly, because I dropped my first 200 pounds within my first year.

I've seen medical literature on my particular surgery that showed that revisions tend to lose more slowly than initial surgery patients.

I think it's like everything else, different people respond differently to treatment.

The link to the article didn't work for me, but I'd like to read it.

I believe lifestyle and our notion of acceptable size contribute to the differences seen in studies.  Many of us concern ourselves with the idea of loosing too much weight or looking sickly before we are anywhere near a normal bmi.  It is a post I have read over and over on BAF.  Other folks often believe you can't be too thin.

Frequently I search for both current and older wls research papers.  I have yet to read a statistically valid, medically reviewed, double blind study that points to any race only based disparity in wls results.  Disparities in results have reflected metabolic issues and habits although many lifestyle habits may be common among a given race.  There are racial differences in muscle density which will be reflected in bmi when comparing whites, Asian, and Black people.  But, if we stick with our respective plans we loose the fat.

The exception may b the wrong surgery for the root causes of your obesity.  Review every procedure available and relate each to your personal lifestyle, dysfunctional food behaviors, and tolerance for the negative aspects.  Finding the procedure with the right fit for you will be your greatest chance for success regardless of race.
