An email from the medical group
While I was at work I received an email from North Shore University. Since I work for the corporation, I didn't pay it any attention. Then I realized that the email had something to do with WLS. They sent me a link to a website, www.startemmi.com where you are required to watch informational videos about various WL surgical options. It's was pretty detailed. Even though I have my mind made up about which surgery I want to undergo, I am curious as to how others feel about their choice, particularly the sleeve vs. Laproscopic gastric bypass.
I have no regrets about RNY & I would do it again given all the options out there today. VSG was my first choice and the reason I selected my surgeon. I rejected DS because of the higher malabsorption and bowel habits; and, rejected various band type procedures because of possible erosion issues.
Fortunately I had no limitations on which procedure to select and I was not pressured by the surgeon to go with any one wls because he could do them all. However, the surgeon reccomended a malabsorptive procedure for my specific situation. Six days pre op, I agreed to RNY instead of VSG.
My suggestion to folks making the wls decision is to hear the anecdotes but remember they are just stories. There are too many cheerleaders for their wls choice and haters of the procedures they decided against. Then add in the general fat phobics who knows someone who... and you have nothing of value. Verified clinical data is easy to find online.
Look hard at the down sides of each procedure as much as you focus on the wl potential. The negatives have to be bearable for life. What is a pro and what is a con should reflect your personal likes and dislikes.
The info you have to review will hopefully be well balanced and totally frank. Although you know what you want you may still find something of interest. At worst, the time spen****ching these clips will confirm you've found what's best for you. Good luck with the whole process.
