Hello everyone,
I am new to this and doing my research to get approved for the sleeve. How did you all tell your family/friends? I am not ready to hear all of the discouraging words and negative comments.
Also, does anyone have any regrets?
Thank you all

Best wishes on your journey towards better health through wl surgery.  Telling family and friends is a personal decision.  Some choose to keep their journey close and never disclose, and others of us are comfortable being completely open about it.  I chose to use my journey as a tool to keep myself accountable for my success or failure, and to also serve as a positive representation of bariatric choices.  I told those close to me first as a point of information, not to garner their personal opinions or fears.  But rather to let them know what I was doing for me to better myself and my help.  Those that didn't agree with my choice, I listened to what they had to say and politely told them they were entitiled to their thoughts, but this way my life and here's what I'm going to do.

I wish you well.

Hi Kendria, I was sleeved last month and I only told close friends and certain family members and believe me someone is bound to say something negative lol no matter what. People that usually say something about it are the ones that don't understand the process and the hard work that goes with it. Its not a easy way out.

Do I have any regrets HECK NO! this has been the best decision I made in awhile. I'm losing and learning how to eat the correct way. everyday I learn something new. I put on clothes I haven't worn in years already.

I have nothing to say negative about my decision. I did exactly what you're doing researching, learning what I could, and asking questions after question and still asking questions. This surgery is saving my life.

Your family and friends do not need to know.  If you expect negativity, leave them out of it for your own good.  Find that one person you can count on.  This is the only one you need tell simply because someone should know you are hospitalized.  For all others this is privileged information.

No regrets here.  I would not take back this rny for the world.  With all the related challenges, it is still the best thing I could ever have done for myself.

thank you all. I am letting my mother know because she needs to know and I am a single mother of 5, I will need her to watch the kids while I am in the hospital. Everyone else, I will not tell. I am not sure what to tell them but I don't want to tell them about the surgery.

I told my mother first. First she was scared then she became really happy and now after the surgery she telling any and everyone about me and how much weight I've loss. She is so proud.

Your mother is a good choice if you feel she will be supportive. Keep us posted. If not anybody we'll be supportive and hold it down for ya.

For those that you don't want to tell about the surgery, if it ever comes up just say you decided to get healthier so you're doing a high protein low carb diet.  This way you're not lying just not telling about the rearrangement of your insides .

I just had a RNY three weeks ago. I told my parents, my sister and one aunt. I told one or two people at work so they knew what I was doing. As far as I was concerned after that, it was on a need to know basis. I will say this. My whole family knows. Apparantly, my dad told a few others. Everyone was very supportful and still is. I agree with everyone else. You choose who you want to tell. Best of luck to you.
Taking it one day at a time.
