Confused: RNY or VSG--Please help !!

RNY on 08/27/12
I am coming up on month 5 of 6 of my 6 month supervised diet requirement. Just when I thought I was 100% on getting RNY, I started to second guess my decision based on comparing he complication rates following RNY as compared to the complications rates following VSG. Of course, both surgeries carry their own set of risks, but can you please provide your feedback on:

1) Which surgery did you choose and why?
2) Was insurance coverage a factor?
3) Do you regret the type of surgery that you chose? If you had it to do over again, which surgery would you choose?
4) Have you had complications following your type of surgery and what kind?
5) How much weight did you lose during the first 6 months?

Just to give you a little background, I am 35 years old....married, mother of 4 children (9,8, 4, and 2). My insurance covers both sleeve and RNY at 100%. My comordities include: high blood pressure, high cholesterol, pre-diabetes, PCOS, migranes, and sleep apnea.

I'm sorry for all of the quesitons, but I am just trying to investigate all that I can before moving forward with making my final decision. Thanks in advance for  your thoughts, opinions, and advice.....

Sincerely,

Rainy

This question comes up a lot in the forums and if you do a search here on OH you'll find a bunch of answers.  I'm a 36 yr old SAHM of 4 and before my RNY I had high blood pressure and GERD. I'm only 2 months out so this is coming from a newbie:

1) Which surgery did you choose and why?   I chose RNY.  For me the only 2 surgeries I would have picked are the RNY or the DS because they both have malabsorption which to me was like having a little more "insurance" that if I made a bad eating choice the malabsorption would be like my backup to not absorb everything I ate.  Since my insurance wouldn't pay for the DS I opted for the RNY.  But also I have GERD which seems to be cured or made a lot better with RNY.  I went in the hospital with GERD and high blood pressure and walked out cured of GERD and off my blood pressure meds.

2) Was insurance coverage a factor?  Yes. But only to the extent of me chosing between the DS or the RNY.  The VSG has never really ranked high with me,

3) Do you regret the type of surgery that you chose? If you had it to do over again, which surgery would you choose?  No regrets thus far.  Even with the food getting stuck and making me bring it back up, I wouldn't change a thing.. (always remember to chew, chew, chew)

4) Have you had complications following your type of surgery and what kind?  None at all

5) How much weight did you lose during the first 6 months? I'm 2 months out and 53 lbs down.

I can say that my best friend had the VSG and lost an amazing amount of weight with it.  He's a year out and went from over 400 lbs to 258.  He has done amazing!!!

Sorry for asking this question, since it's been asked many times before. I think I wanted to get another perspective. I will definitely do a search and continue my research. At this point i am leaning towards VSG...

Thanks so much ladies for your input and opinions. If you don't mind, i would love adding you to my friends list so we can keep in touch.

Hay,
I have chosen the Duodenal Switch, have you looked into that one?
If I can't get the DS I would choose the sleeve personally. x

Thanks for sharing....do you mind sharing more on why you chose the DS over the other procdures?

Or if the DS is not available, why you would choose the Sleeve?

Thanks!

Hay, well DS FACTS is a great website to find information and research on the DS.

I would choose the sleeve as a second option because the pyloric valve is kept intact. If you do a search you can find the comparrisons of the surgeries from past questions. It is a personal choice so I would say make sure to really research EVERY option and then choose what will work for you long term. :-)

Hope all goes well for you !

It really depends on how much weight you have to lose.
